Culver City Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department’s Shotokan Karate-Do class celebrated the graduation of class member Weihang Zhao from UCLA following the 2nd Quarter 2012 rank examinations on June 26.
Weihang began her martial arts training in the Culver City PRCS recreation class in 2003. She will spend her summer vacation in China, returning in the fall to attend Law School at William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Wei Sempai (a senior student) says of her experience: “This Karate class taught me more than anything else how to help and lead others. While learning how to defend myself, I also learned how to command the attention of others while learning from them. It was a multi-cultural experience because of the many different families that gather here.”
First Degree Black Belts (Youth Grade) were presented to Aiyana Verfaillie and Arend Verfaillie in recognition of their accomplishments in training.
Shotokan Karate-Do has been part of the Culver City PRCS recreation program since 1985. Chief Instructor, John Heyl, developed and directed the Children’s program in 1997 and assumed the duties of head instructor in 2009.
Class members are working hard to polish their skills for the annual demonstration at Fiesta La Ballona in August.
