Judging by summer passing league play, newcomer Xan Cuevas is making a strong bid to be Culver City High’s quarterback this season.
Cuevas is a senior who has transferred from Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach.
in last week’s passing league tournament at USC Cuevas directed Culver’s offense most of the time.
The Centaurs won three early games to earn a No. 3 seed for the playoff round, won another game, then were eliminated in the semi-finals by Rancho Verde High of Temecula, a defending CIF champion, 26-13.
“Xan is making excellent progress,” said former Centaur quarterback Greg Goodyear, who tutors the team’s quarterbacks.
Cuevas threw three touchdown passes in the first game, an 18-12 victory over Knight High of Antelope Valley. Two went to senior star Julius Wilson, the other to another senior, Justin Monttgomery.
In the next game Culver routed Antelope Valley, 28-6 as Cuevas threw touchdown passes to Montgomery, Brandon Hassan and Marviel Paaschel and sophomore Steve Funches threw one to Mark Connely.
Culver then had an easy win over the Rancho Verde junior varsity, 28-13
Cuevas threw four touchdown passes. The receivers were Hassan, Montgomery, Wilson and Paschel.
In the playoff round Culver eliminated Frontier High of Bakersfield, 24-18 in overtime as Cuevas threw three more touchdown passes.
The score was 18-18 after regulation. In a unique overtime ruling, one team would get the ball on the opponent’s 15-yard-line. If they scored they’d win. If they didn’t they’d lose.
Frontier had the ball but lost when Culver’s Tahj Mines intercepted a pass.
In Culver’s semi-final loss Cuevas threw a pair of touchdown passes to Wilson.
