Culver Football Opens At West Torrance

Culver City High’s football season will begin on Aug. 31 with a game at West Torrance.

The Centaurs, coached by Jahmal Wright, have been successful in recent years and will play a challenging non-league schedule to prepare for Ocean League competition.

The home opener will be Sept. 7 against Peninsula. On the following Friday night, Sept. 14, Culver will play at Redondo.

The Centaurs should have a pretty good idea of what to expect in that game because Redondo will have played a game against Santa Monica, Culver’s league rival

The non-league schedule will continue with Culver City hosting West Adams, a team from the Los Angeles City Section, and then visiting Bishop Amat.

In a departure from recent years, the Culver City-Santa Monica league game will come early. Last year it was at the end of the schedule and decided the league championship, This time the teams will meet on the third league week, Sept. 18 after Culver has played Hawthorne and Inglewood.

To complete the league schedule Culver will play at Morningside on Sept. 24 and will host Beverly Hills on Nov. 2.

Culver lost the league game to Santa Monica last season, then blasted the Vikings, 37-6 in the third round of the CIF playoffs.

Culver entered the playoffs as the No. 16 seed but shocked No. 1-seeded Serra in the first round and defeated Righetti in the second round.

The Centaurs’ surprising run came to an end with a loss to Arroyo Grande. The overall record was 10-4.

Culver has done well in passing league games this summer but that’s 7-on-7 competition, merely a warmup for the real games coming up.
