New Flyer has announced the delivery of the first dedicated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) public transit buses using the new Xcelsior Platform, to Culver City Bus. These buses will support their fleet renewal and customer enhancement strategies.
The new buses were seen on Route 1 down Washington Blvd on Wednesday to coincide with the Grand Opening of the Expo Light Rail Station in Culver City.
The order for 20 low-floor Xcelsior (XN40) buses was placed using options from another US transit agency for a total purchase price of approximately $ 11 million US dollars. The twenty Xcelsior buses are ideal for high-capacity, high-frequency routes and assist with reducing road congestion using in part, Bus Rapid Transit technologies.
Culver CityBus collaborated with New Flyer to install the first all-electric HVAC system in the CNG powered Xcelsior as well as all electric engine cooling systems, further improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
“We are excited to grow our long partnership with the Culver CityBus,” Paul Soubry, President and CEO of New Flyer said. “The XN40 series are a proven heavy-duty low-floor bus design, known for its durability and dependability built on proven technologies and high quality manufacturing principals. They provide a great experience for up to 41 seated passengers and meet Culver CityBus’ standards for comfort, and reliability.”
The order for 20, XN40 series buses is backed by New Flyer’s lifetime in-service support and care, providing best value in direct operating costs for the Culver CityBus.
The last purchase of heavy-duty transit buses by the Culver CityBus was in 2009 - and was also with New Flyer. These20 Xcelsior buses replace 20 1998 CNG buses. Culver CityBus currently operates 52 transit buses in their fleet with all of them being CNG powered and manufactured by New Flyer.
