Culver Football Tunes Up In Tournaments

The Culver City High football team annually prepares for its upcoming season by participating in summer passing tournaments.

Although tackling isn’t permitted, coaches learn about their players, particularly passers and receivers who are getting their timing together in the seven against seven competition.

In the Pierce College Tournament Culver City defeated Oaks Christian, 34-18 as sophomore Steve Funches threw two touchdown passes to Julio Wilson and Tahj Mines had an interception.

Culver then defeated Grant, 44-28 as Funches threw six touchdown passes, including two each to Wilson and Brendan Hassan.

Culver reached the championship game but lost to Sylmar, 25-23 despite Wilson catching three touchdown passes.

Wilson, regarded as one of the top senior receivers in the Southern California high school ranks, is considering many college scholarship offers.

Culver moved on to the Beverly Hills Tournament. It defeated Malibu, 22-8 as Xan Cuevas, the likely varsity quarterback starter next season, made his summer debut.

Cuevas threw three touchdown passes to Wilson. Then in a 20-20 tie with View Park he threw two to Wilson and one to sophomore Donovan Davis.

Culver played South Torrance, which will be its opening game opponent next season, and won in overtime, 26-20 as Wilson caught three touchdown passes.

Besides Funches and Cuevas, Gary Graves is in the Centaurs’ quarterback competition.
