In evaluating Culver City High baseball in 2012 Coach Rick Prieto says “it was a good season.”
Despite being eliminated in the second playoff round by Paramount High the Centaurs had of their best seasons ever.
They went undefeated in the Ocean League for the first time in school history, reversed last year’s final week pair of losses to similarly unbeaten Santa Monica and shut out their first round playoff opponent, Eastside of Lancaster.
In discussing Culver’s 3-0 loss to Paramount, a team they defeated in last year’s playoffs, Priieto said “it was a game similar to our wins over Santa Monica and our first playoff game except that we couldn’t score.”
Culver had three promising innings against Paramount but couldn’t break through against pitcher Steven Espinoza. Each time they had a runner on second base.
Espinoza had a no-hitter through five innings before Adrian Perez singled in the sixth.
But as the season ended Prieto looked back fondly on a season when Culver won 20 games.
A positive development was the improvement of sophomore pitcher Jay Steiner, who was called upon in several late season crucial games and will be counted on heavily next season.
Although the season is over the baseball is not. Culver immediately goes into summer competition. The Centaurs will play Loyola High on June 18 and El Segundo the next day.
