Centaurs Begin Busiest Baseball Week

The busiest week of the high school baseball season is underway for the Culver City Centaurs.

Due to a rainout last week, a makeup game this week and a Saturday tournament game Coach Rick Prieto’s team will play four times – and right in the midst of a league championship showdown with Santa Monica the following week.

On Tuesday Culver hosted Morningside. On Thursday culver will play at Morningside. On Friday Culver will make up the rained out game at Inglewood. On Saturday Culver will complete its participation in the Redondo tournament by playing West Torrance in a game at Culver at 2 pm.

In the one league game played last week Culver defeated Inglewood, 15-0 as Tyler Mark allowed only one hit in five innings and struck out 13. The shutout was completed by relievers Nathaniel Matthews and Patrick Warfel, who pitched one inning apiece.

Brian Ibarra had three hits and Darian Sylvester two.

On Saturday Culver lost a Redondo Tournament game to Oaks Christian, 4-2 in eight innings despite Jay Steiner pitching three scoreless innings at the outset..

Trailing, 2-0, Culver rallied as Timothy Stewart drove in Skyler Blocker and two innings later Blocker doubled to score George Aceves, who had singled.

But the Centaurs lost in the extra inning.

On Tuesday, May 8, Culver will play at Santa Monica. Two days later the Centaurs will host the Vikings.

Last season both teams were undefeated in league games going into the final week. They played twice and Santa Monica won both games.

It could be that both will again be undefeated in league games when they collide next week.

An anticipated pitching duel will be Mark against Santa Monica’s Adam Padilla, who won last season’s marquee matchup, 2-1 and was then named Ocean League Player of the Year.
