On Thursday, March 16, Riki Nishijima (l) and Mayumi Yoshiyama (r) arrived from Culver City's Sister City in Kaizuka, Japan. Both are runners and annually, for the past 19 years, Culver Sister City has sponsored two runners to the L.A. Marathon.
This exchange of runners began when we were first invited to run the Senshu Marathon in honor of the opening of the new international airport in Japan and sister cities from throughout the world participated. This practice continues today with all of the cities in Japan that have sister cities throughout the world being invited to participate in the International Senshu Marathon.
Kaizuka, Japan recently sponsored our two runners, Matt Seeberger and Mary Beth Pohl in the Senshu Marathon and Matt Seeberger thanked the Culver City Council this past Monday night for the ongoing support the city's demonstrated in the relationship between Kaizuka and Culver City.
Of a very special note is that our visiting runners have agreed to help support a non-profit organization called Ashinaga Ikueikai that will directly help an effort concentrated to help the kids in devastated area of Tohoku - this is right after the first anniversary of the devastating Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. In fact, many of our former Culver City runners that will be running in the L.A. Marathon will wear the Ashinaga T-shirt to demonstrate their support of this new L.A. Marathon Charity.
The Culver City Sister City Committee, Inc. continues to send financial support to Kaizuka and that support is sent where needed in the affected earthquake and tsunami areas.
