The season ended for the Culver City High boys basketball team Tuesday night.
Coach Jon Chapman said he was concerned when he didn’t see much zip in his players during warm-ups for their second round playoff game against Colony High of Ontario.
He had reason to be concerned. The Centaurs fell 28 points behind at halftime.
Culver rallied to come within nine points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t come closer.
“We made a game of it,” said Chapman. “Near the finish we kept fouling in order to get the ball back but they made 22 of 23 free throws.”
The Centaurs finished with a 14-14 record.
Aamahd Walker was Culver’s leading scorer with 25 points. Keilan Horton scored 18 and Julius Wilson 13.
In the first round last Friday night Culver outlasted Savanna High of Anaheim, 53-49 on its home court.
Walker and Horton combined for all but five of Culver’s points.
“I pointed out to the team that without those five points from other players we would have lost,’ said Chapman, who has constantly encouraged other players to shoot when they’re open.
Culver went on a 22-2 second quarter run to build a seemingly comfortable lead but the margin was reduced to two points late in the game.
The surging Culver City High girls team, which went 10-0 in the Ocean League, won its opening round playoff game from El Dorado, 62-37.
The Centaurs played Arlington High of Riverside Wednesday night but the result was not available at press time.
