When the Culver City High boys basketball team began Ocean League play last week it competed well but came up short twice.
Culver lost to Morningside, 66-60 on Wednesday and Santa Monica on Friday, 67-61.
The losses left the Centaurs with an 8-9 record.
Earlier this season Coach Jon Chapman observed that inexperience would have to be overcome.
Forward Aamahd Walker and guard Keilan Horton are superior scorers but a new batch of players lack varsity experience.
Against Santa Monica Culver got off to a slow start and trailed, 7-0. The Centaurs worked their way into the battle and came within two points, 52-50 in the fourth quarter. But Jordan Matthews, Santa Monica’s high scorer, then made a three-point shot.
The 6-foot-5 Matthews is the son of Phil Matthews, an assistant to Ben Howland at UCLA.
It hasn’t been determined if UCLA will offer Jordan Matthews a scholarship but he’s likely to have a future in college basketball, as is Culver’s Walker.
Culver will play at Inglewood and Hawthorne this week. The next home game will be against Beverly Hills Jan. 25 at 7:30 pm.
Culver won 20 games last season and this season is attempting to have a winning record and again achieve a CIF playoff berth.
