The Culver High boys water polo team defeated Mira Costa, 18-14 on Sept. 27..
Mira Costa scored first but Culver’s kept battling and gained control of the game in the second quarter and led 9-7 at halftime.
The Centaurs continued to control the game throughout the second half and though, not dominating, there was little doubt that Culver City was the better team in the pool that day. As potent as the Centaurs offense counter-attacks were, it was their defense of “the hole,” denying the entry pass in front of the goal that kept the Mustangs from mounting a late charge.
The Olympic-sized pool may have played a factor in the outcome. The Centaurs’ better conditioning was quite apparent in the second half as they mounted many successful counterattacks off steals and errant passes by the Mustang players.
Cristobal Galvan led all scorers with seven goals and Pedro Dos Santos had six. Along with his superb defensive play throughout the game, Dario Fantella scored five goals.
Goalie Allesandro Furlan played well and had eight saves.
