It’s summer, and that means Culver City High’s football team is preparing for the upcoming season.
The Centaurs participated in the first of several passing league tournaments last week and reached the semi-finals of the San Fernando Valley Elite event.
Included was a quarter-final 41-32 victory over top-seeded Westlake.
Culver then lost its semi-final game to Alemany, 35-23.
In pool play Culver defeated St. Genevieve, 44-7 and Palmdale, 43-34 and lost to Birmingham, 26-25 in overtime.
Culver quarterback Lukas O’Connor didn’t play in the first few games but Kevin Porche came through with several touchdown passes. The receivers were Alex Jackson, Reggie House, Akili Skannal and Michael Fortune.
In another game Jackson, Sidney Dorsey and Jimmy Hayward scored while Miles Washington and 6-foot-4 senior Yamen Sanders had interceptions.
In the quarter-final game with Westlake O’Connor took over at quarterback and Porche, moving to receiver, caught a touchdown pass, as did Fortune.
In the loss to Alemany O’Connor threw a touchdown pass to Porche.
Culver coach Jahmal Wright said he was pleased with the play of several newcomers to the varsity.
Culver has a strong senior class with more than a half dozen attracting attention from college recruiters.
The Centaurs will participate in a passing league tournament on Saturday at West Los Angeles College.
