Beautiful ceremony, beautiful words – this Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. will mark the annual Abe Lincoln Remembrance Day at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood, where war veterans from Lincoln's time to the present are buried. It will feature the Gettysburg Address read by a celebrity (unannounced as we go to press, but past presenters have included Hal Holbrook, Charlton Heston, Ray Bradbury, and Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith), a band playing civil war music, banjo and fiddle performances, remarks on Lincoln’s life, and refreshments, too. There is no charge, and the public is invited.
Members should take their sweeties to the Valentine’s Day meeting of the Culver City Rock & Mineral Club if they want to stay in good standing at home! Not only will there be a fascinating program titled “On the Hunt for Meteorites,” presented by Brett Johnson from the Oxnard Gem & Mineral Society, but of course there’ll be fellowship and refreshments. (Note: we’ll allow Program Chair Ellen Moe her suggestion that members bring their own meteorites to the meeting for show and tell, and “If you are not sure if it is from outer space, Brett will do his best to see if it is a meteorite or a meteowrong…” The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Veterans’ Memorial Building, 4117 Overland Avenue. Really great listening are Culver City local Sonny “B”s three groups, "Mystic Knights Trio,” "Hound dog Dave and the Mel-tones," (the Knights with the addition of a bass player), and "U.S. 99" (early rock and roll). They’re now available for bookings on Wednesday nights, and are hoping the “Hound dog Dave” quartet will get a shot at playing at Fiesta LaBallona this year! Drummer Sonny “B” can be reached at (310) 387-6947 for booking.
