By Melanie Trup Special to the Observer How good is Culver City High’s football team this year? If their performance in Saturday’s passing tournament at West LA College was any indication, the Centaur faithful have a lot to look forward to. The Centaurs were led in the field of six teams (Washington Prep, Fairfax, Cabrillo of Long Beach, the host Wildcats- who fielded a team of their incoming freshmen, and University) by quarterback Lukas O’Connor, who recently played an important role on the baseball team that advanced to the CIF semi final...
It’s summer, and that means Culver City High’s football team is preparing for the upcoming season. The Centaurs participated in the first of several passing league tournaments last week and reached the semi-finals of the San Fernando Valley Elite event. Included was a quarter-final 41-32 victory over top-seeded Westlake. Culver then lost its semi-final game to Alemany, 35-23. In pool play Culver defeated St. Genevieve, 44-7 and Palmdale, 43-34 and lost to Birmingham, 26-25 in overtime. Culver quarterback Lukas O’Connor didn’t play in the first...
Ever since he was 10 years old, watching college football games on TV, Ijumaa Armstrong wanted to play football for the University of Hawaii. Armstrong got that wish granted last week when the Culver City High safety signed a letter-of-intent to play for the Rainbow Warriors. Armstrong, one of the Centaurs’ top defensive players the past two seasons, said he’s excited about heading off to the island. “Hawaii was my first choice all along,” Armstrong said. “I grew up watching them as a little kid. I love it there. It’s an island paradise....
The roller coaster ride that has been the Culver City High football team’s 2010 season is on the rise. The Centaurs, who have been up and down all season, hit a high point last Friday when they defeated Beverly Hills 49-34 in their regular-season finale to clinch a CIF playoff spot. It was a game they had to win to make the postseason, and Culver City came up with one of its best offensive performances of the season when it needed it most. Culver City’s defense also came up big, as the Centaurs built a 36-7 lead and held off a rally by Bev...
The odds were against the Culver City High football team winning last Friday’s non-league game against Redondo. The Centaurs went into the game without two of their top running backs, then lost a third during the game. Then they lost their starting quarterback during their final possession. And they trailed 17-14 in the final minutes, with the ball at their own 28-yard line, needing a 72-yard march to win the game. But Centaurs coach Jahmal Wright always tells his team that it doesn’t do any good to make excuses. “We always talk about overc...
Culver City High football coaches Jahmal Wright and Aki Wilson have a unique perspective on the Centaurs’ two four-peats. Four-peat, as in four consecutive Ocean League titles, which the Centaurs accomplished last Friday with a 49-0 victory over Hawthorne. The win assured Culver City of at least a tie for the league title, and the Centaurs (8-1 overall, 4-0 league) can clinch the title outright with a victory on Friday at Beverly Hills. The only other time the Centaurs won four consecutive league titles, from 1991 to 1994, Wright, the C...
Just as the season is winding down, the Culver City High football team’s defense is beginning to hit its stride, and it appears as if the result will be another Ocean League title. Last week against Santa Monica, what had looked like a showdown turned out to be a blowout, as the Centaurs jumped out to a 49-6 lead en route to a 49-28 victory over the Vikings. The victory gave Culver City (7-1 overall, 3-0 Ocean League) a firm grasp on first place in the league standings. With two games left in the regular season, the Centaurs are a game ahead o...
Many of the Culver City High football players have become sick from the flu the past few days – even head coach Jahmal Wright unfortunately caught the bug – but the Centaurs looked plenty healthy last Friday against Morningside. Senior quarterback/defensive back Marquel Carter continued his outstanding play, and the Centaurs’ defense stopped a trend of giving up big pass plays in Culver City’s 56-7 rout of Morningside in an Ocean League contest. Carter completed 14 of 21 passes for 244 yards and five touchdowns (with one interception), and he...
At this point, it looks as if the Culver City High football team will go as far as its offense takes it. The Centaurs won another shootout last Friday night, scoring on four straight possessions in the second and third quarters for a 55-44 victory over Inglewood in their Ocean League opener. After putting together a last-second drive two weeks ago to defeat Redondo, Culver City got rolling earlier this time, turning a 22-20 deficit into a 48-22 lead. For the game, the Centaurs had 514 yards. But questions about the Centaurs’ defense persist. Cu...
With the Culver City High football team facing its second straight loss last Friday, Marquel Carter stepped up to save the day. The Centaurs’ senior quarterback had a record performance, completing 33 of 51 passes for 532 yards and three touchdowns, and threw the winning touchdown pass with eight seconds left as Culver City rallied from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit for a 35-33 non-league victory over Redondo. The completions, attempts and passing yards are all school records. Carter also ran for two touchdowns as he continued to be the l...
This wasn’t what the Culver City High football team envisioned. When the Centaurs took on Crenshaw, widely regarded as the best team in the L.A. City Section and probably one of the top teams in Southern California, last week at home, Culver City saw itself hanging tough with the No. 1-ranked team in the L.A. Times’ poll and the No. 5-ranked team in the state. The Centaurs, who beat the Cougars two years ago and almost rallied from a 21-0 deficit before losing to them by a touchdown last year, pictured a hard-fought game with a chance to win...
Last Friday, the Culver City High football team survived an early scare to defeat Centennial of Compton, 42-23, to improve to 3-0. But that difficulty -- which lasted only two quarters -- may be nothing compared to the test that awaits Culver City this week. On Friday Culver City hosts Crenshaw, the No. 1-ranked team in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times and No. 5 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. The Cougars, who reached the L.A. City semifinals last season, are 3-0 this season, having already defeated Lakewood -- the No. 5 team in the...
Every time Peninsula High made a mistake, the Culver City High football team capitalized Friday afternoon. The Centaurs won again, following up their opener against St. Bernard with another explosive performance on offense and an opportunistic performance on defense, which led to a 42-24 non-league victory.. The heat at Peninsula was stifling, but it wasn’t as hot as the Centaurs’ offense, which put up 42 points after scoring 49 in Culver City’s opening game. Senior quarterback Marquel Carter was the linchpin again, passing for 236 yards and t...
The Culver City High football team started the 2009 season last Friday with a new head coach and several new players on defense, but one thing looked very familiar: The Centaurs’ high-octane offense. Senior quarterback Marquel Carter, beginning his second season as the Centaurs’ starter, showed he is poised to have a big season, throwing for three touchdowns and running for two more to lead Culver City to a 49-21 victory over St. Bernard in Jahmal Wright’s debut as the team’s coach. Wright, who served as both offensive and defensive coordin...
