The USC men’s basketball team moved into a tie for first place in the Pac-12 when they beat UCLA 89-75 last week at UCLA. One of the main reasons they were able to defeat the Bruins was the play of freshman Chimezie Metu. Against the Bruins Metu, who played for Lawndale high school last year, made eight out of 10 shots while scoring 21 points. Some of the moves he made against the Bruins would make an NBA scout smile. He also recorded eight rebounds and he leads the team in block shots this season with 32. “He is learning the college gam...
By Myke Williams Sports Reporter The UCLA men's and women's basketball teams are playing competitive basketball in leagues where on any given night the last place team can beat a top team. The league is that competitive. The UCLA men found that out during their first weekend of Pac-12 play when they lost to Washington and Washington State. After starting 0-2 in the Pac-12 the Bruin men turned their fortunes around when they swept the Arizona schools last week. Their 87-84 thrilling victory over...
By Myke Williams Sports Reporter The USC men’s and women’s basketball teams are a combined 28-5 at press time. For any school that’s a great record but for USC it’s surprising. The men are 14-3 and the women’s record is 14-2. Known as a football school, this year it looks like the Trojans can add basketball to that label. In Pac-12 play the men are 3-1 which is good enough for second place and the women are 2-2 and in seventh place but only one game away from being in second place. Both teams are coming off impressive wins last weekend....
By Myke Williams Sports Reporter The UCLA Bruins and USC Trojan men’s basketball teams hope their home courts will provide that extra push into the victory circle this week when they take on the Arizona schools. The Bruins played Arizona last Thursday and will face Arizona State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus. The Trojans played Arizona State last Thursday and will battle Arizona on Saturday at 4...

By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor John Wooden guided UCLA to 10 national championships and there’s a solid case that he’s the greatest coach in college basketball history. But if you’re a fan of Mike Krzyzewski your man is building a solid case too. When Duke defeated Wisconsin, 68-63 in the NCAA Championship game Monday night it was Krzyzewski’s fifth national championship in his record 12th appearance in the Final Four. And this was one of his best coaching jobs. Even with spectacular freshma...
By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor When John Wooden was coaching 10 UCLA basketball teams to national championships there was no ESPN. Times have certainly changed. Now the schools best identified with the network rule college baskrtball. The conferences that have Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky etcetra have a big advantage in recruiting. High school stars want to be seen nationally, getting the exposure that will help them be recognized by NBA teams. That's the reality of the situation. Steve Alfo...
By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor UCLA’s loss to Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 last week was the final game for Chris Roberts, who has broadcast Bruin football and basketball for the last 23 years. By George Laase Special to the Observer Back in 1994, CBS Sports bought the rights to the NCAA men's basketball tournament with an eight-year contract averaging $215 million annually. This month, a single, 30-second TV ad airing during the men’s Final Four will cost the advertiser around $1.5 million. The prospect of selling future advertising during the College Football Playoffs is seen as being so lucrative that ESPN bid more than $5.5 billion over the next 12 years for the rights. As the NCAA coffers continue to balloon, lawsuits are p...

UCLA enters the 2015 season looking to bounce back from a rough campaign last season which saw the team miss the postseason for the first time since 2009. The Bruins swept three games from Hofstra to begin the season. Despite missing the postseason in 2014 the Bruins' program is at an all-time high having made the postseason in seven of the last 10 seasons including three trips to the College World Series and a National Championship in 2013. This year's squad returns 19 players who were a part...
By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor I was a young sportswriter, in my 20s when I joined the staff at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. There was a UCLA background in my family. My brother had graduated from UCLA, and even though I tried to be an objective journalist Bob Boyd, the USC basketball coach, labeled me a Bruin. "We have to make you into a Trojan," he would say. "We can get a psychiatrist to help." It was all in good fun and it continued for many years. Regardless of how many objective...
Armed with one of the top pitching staffs in the nation and five returning position player starters, Vanderbilt is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball's Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I pre-season poll. UCLA is ranked 10th. Defending national champion Vanderbilt features four Louisville Slugger pre-season All-Americans including RHP Carson Fulmer (7-1, 10 SV, 1.98 ERA, 98 K). The pre-season poll factors in voting by NCAA Division I coaches across the nation, how a team finished last season, returning position player starters and pitchers, potential...
UCLA scored only seven points in the first half of its 83-44 loss to top-ranked Kentucky last Saturday. It was the lowest scoring half in the Bruins’ history. The previous low was 15. The two teams have won the most NCAA men’s basketball championships in history. But this season Kentucky is expected to go through the regular season with few losses, perhaps none. The Wildcats have a 12-0 record with nine McDonalds All-Americans on the roster, most of them expecting to play in the NBA. By contrast, UCLA was the only school in the country thi...
