Next: Showdown With Santa Monica Talent alone is not enough to make it to the Big Dance. It takes leadership, understanding, preparation, practice, patience and execution to secure such a date with destiny. Defending Ocean League baseball champions Culver City High walked the walk once again by high-stepping Morningside High with two more league victories last week by scores of 16-0 and 11-1. • Culver Ballplayers Succeed In Academics Too

Fred Altieri, Special to the Observer|Apr 25, 2013

Education and baseball are inseparable positive forces at Culver City High. When the 2013 baseball season began in late February, varsity baseball Coach Rick Prieto emphatically stressed, “I think our best asset is our players, their character and their academics. We're 3.5 across the board in our program academically. “ I'm very proud of that, very much so because that's where it all starts. Everything is secondary after that. Then the students come out and dedicate themselves to our program wi...

  • Beverly Provides Test, But Culver Wins

Fred Altieri, Special to the Observer|Apr 15, 2013

The late and greatly admired John Wooden, affectionately known as Coach, not only lived but also wrote the definitive book on success. He stated, “Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” The Culver City High baseball team respectively began to defend its Ocean League title with a two-game sweep of Beverly Hills, a 5-0 shutout in their home opener on Tuesday and a 7-4 victory in 10 innings Thursday at La Cienega Park, Bev...

  • Culver Baseball Loses To North Torrance

Fred Altieri, Special to the Observer|Apr 8, 2013

The game of baseball is no different than the game of life in that history has a way of repeating itself. In fact, in baseball it’s expected. And for the Culver City High baseball team it stretched along Artesia Blvd. from Manhattan Beach two weeks ago to North High in Torrance last Wednesday, a foreboding location for their final non-league game before the 2013 Ocean League play began on Tuesday. The Centaurs again took a one-run lead into the bottom of the sixth inning on the road and once a...

  • Culver Gets Big Baseball Win Over Torrance

Fred Altieri, Special to the Observer|Apr 1, 2013

A Torrance Press article from 1957 reports: “The City of Torrance has virtually grown up around the US Steel Torrance Works.” 56 years later and just around the corner from where the former plant stood, the Culver City High baseball team visited the historically well-tempered Torrance High Tartars in their picturesque yet intimidating ball park, using the game as a forging process to further test and strengthen the Centaurs’ program. The final result was a hardened Culver City squad that held...

  • Centaurs On Road Split Two Games

    Fred Altieri|Mar 25, 2013

By Fred Alteiri Special to the Observer The 2013 spring equinox, appropriately bookended by two Culver City High varsity baseball road games, literally means ‘equal night’ and occurs when the sun’s path crosses the plane of the earth’s equator. The Centaurs took their successful act on the road after beginning the early season with an impressive 8-2 winning record based largely on what Coach Rick Prieto prescribed as good ‘home-cooking’. Moving into Phase Two, the coach has scheduled f...

And on Saturday Centaur Coach Rick Prieto’s squad twice shut out Lennox Academy doubleheader. The final scores of 21-0 and 15-0 are numbers the s...

  • Culver Baseball Team has Early 5-2 Record

Fred Altieri, Special to the Observer|Mar 11, 2013

Classic Greek mythology reveals that the Centaurs originated from clouds. So it was very apropos when omniscient gray clouds made their entrance just as the Culver City High baseball team took the home field against Palisades on Tuesday, March 5. Fittingly, the Centaurs responded to the elements with a very convincing 10-1 victory. Starting pitcher Jay Sterner recorded two innings of perfect ball and four strikeouts. Balancing his efforts were the Culver City bats as senior centerfielder Tim Ste...

Fred Altieri, Special to the Observer|Mar 4, 2013

Baseball is a team sport and is often noted for its mystical association with the world of numbers. So far the 2013 Culver City High baseball team is performing as a very good team while displaying an aptitude for creating very good numbers. In the second week of action the Centaurs played three games in four days and won two. They took the high scoring offense from their Opening Day 12-0 shutout victory over Hoover on the road to Venice High on Wednesday, February 27, and scored another 12...

  • Centaurs Begin Baseball Season with Shutout

Fred Altieri, Special to the Observer|Feb 26, 2013

Opening Day holds a special place in the annals of baseball lore and the Saturday morning non-league game between Glendale Hoover High and Culver City, last year's Ocean League champions, only reinforced the tradition. It was 10 a.m., the sun was out in Culver City, the temperature was a perfect 65 degrees, there was a slight breeze out of the northwest and the bleachers behind home plate were filling up. Two hours later to the minute the blue and white clad Culver City faithful were rewarded...

  • Culver Concludes 'A Good Baseball Season'

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|May 30, 2012

In evaluating Culver City High baseball in 2012 Coach Rick Prieto says “it was a good season.” Despite being eliminated in the second playoff round by Paramount High the Centaurs had of their best seasons ever. They went undefeated in the Ocean League for the first time in school history, reversed last year’s final week pair of losses to similarly unbeaten Santa Monica and shut out their first round playoff opponent, Eastside of Lancaster. In discussing Culver’s 3-0 loss to Paramount, a team th...

  • Ibarra's One-Hitter Highlights Centaurs' Sweep

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Apr 25, 2012

One more strike and Brian Ibarra would have had a no-hitter on April 19. However, with a 1-2 count a Hawthorne High batter singled and the Culver City High righthander settled for a one-hitter in a 5-1 victory. After the single Jay Steiner came in to get the final out. However, Ibarra’s performance highlighted a grand week for the Centaurs, who had defeated Hawthorne, 13-1 two days earlier. As a result Culver City stayed even with defending Ocean League champion Santa Monica, which also has a 4...

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Apr 18, 2012

There have been two chapters in Culver City High’s 2012 baseball season, non-league and tournament games for Coach Rick Prieto to evaluate his talent, and the start of Ocean League competition. Last week a third chapter was added – a showcase game in a college stadium between two of Southern California’s premier teams. Culver City lost to nationally-ranked Harvard Westlake of North Hollywood, 3-0 at USC’s Dedeaux Field. But the experience of competing on that level was a highlight of the Cen...

The Centaurs lost a home doubleheader to Capistrano Valley Christian, then lost to St. John Bosco, 4-1. Daruan Sylvester had two hits in one of the games against Capistrano Valley Christian and Jay Steiner pitched 4 2/3 innings without a decision. In the loss to St. John Bos...

  • Centaurs Tune Up with Non-League Games

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Apr 6, 2012

Wisely, Culver City High schedules challenging non-league baseball games to prepare for the Ocean League. The strategy worked last season when the Centaurs didn’t win the league championship but proceeded to win three playoff games, including two in Orange County. Culver won eight of its first 10 games this season, including a pair of routs over Beverly Hills in league games. Then the Centaurs lost three of four against formidable non-league foes. The losses were 9-6 to Palos Verdes and a d...
