For the past three years Culver City high school has had one of the best football programs in the state. Now the Centaurs have arrived. They are ranked 24th in the state and 16th in Southern California. "I believed this is the first time we have been ranked that high in the state," said Culver City Athletic Director Tom Salter this week. Usually those type of high rankings are reserved for Division 1 schools, but the Centaurs have reached that elite level with outstanding players and coaches....

By David Ganezer It has been said that SMRR could run monkeys, and people would pull the levers. That’s usually true, but it was not true in 2020. In an historic repudiation of Santa Monicans for Renters Rights, Phil Brock and Christine Parra appear to have won seats on the Santa Monica City Council. More incumbent city councilmembers (three) were voted out of office this week than in the past thirty years. The 4 members slate (Brock, Parra, de la Torre and Mario Fonda-Bonardi) had promised to slow the growth that has chewed up every parking l...
Niche, a website that helps parents discover schools and neighborhoods that are right for them, has named Culver City Unified School District the third most diverse school district in California. The site also identified CCUSD as the 29th best place to teach in California (among 690 districts) and ranked the District No. 37 on its 2021 list of Best School Districts in California. Using a wide array of statistics, Niche's 2021 rankings are based on rigorous analysis of demographic and student...
Ever wonder what it would be like to be a young poet roaming the country with your manual typewriter, hiring yourself out in malls and wherever you could set up a little work area so you could have strangers pour out their thoughts to you in exchange for a personalized poem? Wonder no more. Village Well Books & Coffee, a new independent general interest bookstore and café near City Hall and presently under construction at 9900 Culver Blvd. on the southwest corner of Culver Blvd. and Duquesne...
Dear Editor, As a thirty-five year resident of Culver City, I've seen lots of changes - some good and some bad. But never yet have I witnessed the City losing its moral compass . . . until tonight, June 25, 2018. The City Council convened to discuss and revisit the recent events whereby the four Progressive council members banded together to disallow Goran Eriksson, the one remaining moderate member his rightful turn as vice mayor/mayor and instead handed it over to Meghan Sahli-Wells, queen-bee Progressive and backer of the new members, in...
Despite the reopening of a few private schools, such as a local Montessori preschool, local public schools will not reopen anytime soon. We asked Sarah Wahrenbrock, Assistant to the Superintendent, about a rumor that schools would soon be reopening. “I’m not sure where that rumor came from,” she said. “LA County is still in Tier 1, which means schools cannot reopen, except for small cohorts of high-risk, high-need students to receive assessments and services.” “Once the county moves into Tier 2, the Dept of Public Health and LACOE will let sc...
by Corva Corvax A Logical Opinion Governor Newsom sent AB331, a bill requiring an Ethnic Studies course for California high school graduation, back to the legislature without a signature on September 30, the last possible day for his action on the legislation. Writing that "I value the role ethnic studies plays in helping students think critically about our history and understand the experience of marginalized communities in our state," Newsom believed the bill was not ready to be made into law. "Last year I expressed concern that the initial...

Dear Editor, We all grew up in Culver City and we graduated from Culver City High school in the past five years. Now, as adults and part of the Culver City community, we look forward to and expect Culver City Unified School District to thrive for many years to come. Scott Zeidman is the perfect candidate for the Culver City Board of Education. Scott is not only exceedingly caring and responsible, but he constantly has stressed academics to all of us. Culver City High School alumni Matthew...
The Bruins and Trojans will not play football this fall because of the coronavirus but that does not mean you won't see UCLA and USC players on the field playing professional football in the NFL. They will be well represented on Sundays and five of them will be playing at the new SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Playing for the Rams will be wide receiver Robert Woods and linebacker Kenny Young. Suiting up for the Chargers will be running back Joshua Kelly, linebacker Uchenna Nwosu and offensive...
Culver City high school varsity swim coach experienced a first year last spring that was one for the ages. Peter Egan’s hopes for a great season turned into disappointment because of the coronavirus. Like all of the Culver City high school spring sports the excitement of seeing talented athletes perform in league play and eventually in the CIF playoffs turned into a nightmare. “There are quite a few of very talented swimmers in our community and one of the big disappointments this past spr...
by Alyssa Erdley News with Attitude Declaring they were "building community," the Santa Monica City Council voted on additional rules to try forcing out Airbnb-type rentals. Under the new law, landlords could not offer a lease for less than a year. The lease would have to be made to a "natural person" rather than a corporation. And furnished units would be forbidden. To advertise any unit that does not comply with these regulations would also be prohibited. The stated goal of the new...
By Leanord “Guzz” Brophy IV If you want to win a political race in this city, you’re probably going to need the support of Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights, better known as SMRR, or face a tough uphill battle. At its recent online convention, SMRR endorsed only City Council incumbents, although not all of them got the nod. The endorsees are Gleam Davis, Ted Winterer, Ana Jara, and Kristin McCowan (McCowan is running unopposed in a special election to keep the seat she was appointed to in July). The only incumbent left off the endorse...
Officially, Labor Day is a time to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers. Like apple pie, Labor Day sales have become an institution in the United States. This weekend, sports fans and memorabilia collectors can take advantage of a unique 20-year partnership and help support education at the same time. And as a sign of the times, all one needs is a mobile device, home computer or online accessibility. Labor Day Weekend is also the unofficial end of summer, a time...
The Sandy Segal Youth Health Center, located on the campus of Culver City High School and Culver City Middle School, is continuing to offer quality, affordable critical care even though the building is currently closed due to the pandemic. Venice Family Clinic manages the services at the Health Center and has been holding patient visits by telemedicine or in person at another one of their facilities. During these difficult, stressful times students may feel isolated and alone. It is important for them to be able to reach out when they need...
by Corva Corvax A Logical Opinion The top administrators at the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District presented their work on creating better student achievement and combating racism during a Special Meeting of the school board on Tuesday evening. Citing the persistent achievement gap that has existed in the district between white and Asians on the one hand and other minorities on the other, staff leapt to the conclusion that racial bias had to be the reason behind the difference in test scores. The school district has been trying to...

Almost every successful organization is led by brilliant people at the top and a lot of times they are unsung heroes. They don't get a lot of credit but everyone in the organization knows who that person is. When you talk about Culver City High School sports that person is Athletic Director Tom Salter. Salter came to Culver City High School 22 years ago from Bishop Amat High School in La Puente as one of the best high school football coaches in the state. After coaching football at Culver City...
