  • MOVIE REVIEW: Green Room

    debbie lynn elias|May 19, 2016

I always knew "green rooms" could be dangerous places - especially back in the 70's and 80's at the height of metal and then with 90's punk and free-flowing drugs and alcohol, but Jeremy Saulnier takes the idea of a green room to a whole new deliciously twisted level with GREEN ROOM. As we know from “Blue Ruin”, Saulnier is adept at carefully placed and judiciously utilized tongue-in-cheek double entendres, and GREEN ROOM is no different; most notably with the band's name - "The Ain't Rig...

Transparency in local government needs to make a comeback. Another breath of fresh air is Meghan Sahli-Wells, who has countless new ideas to move the city along. We need strong women who can take charge and make improvements as necessary. It has been 65 years since Earl Lloyd became the first African American to play in the National Bas...

A big 21-gun salute to Herb and Diane Rosenberg, who reaffirmed their 50th anniversary vows on Saturday, January 9 at Temple Akiba. Wanting to challenge herself, and feeling the emotion that leaps off the page and into one’s very soul in reading the heart wrenching, gripping and ultimately joyous tear-jerker, Donoghue was at the ready when Hollywood came calling. Initially set completely within the confines of a tiny, windowless (but for an unreachable skylig...

  • MOVIE REVIEW: No Good Deed

    debbie lynn elias|Sep 18, 2014

Continuing with themes of old adages and films lensed within a single confined space, I turn your attention to NO GOOD DEED. As your mother always told you, no good deed goes unpunished and that's exactly what happens to Taraji P. Henson's "Terry" in NO GOOD DEED. Terry is a devoted wife and mother of a four-year old daughter and newborn son. From the looks of her plush, suburban wooded Atlanta neighborhood and her house, her husband provides well for the family. From the exterior of the house...

  • Chinese Buying All the Milk? Expect Prices to Rise

    Neil Rubenstein|Sep 4, 2014

By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist Can anyone help me understand what is going on with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the deputies who man the central jail? I know some deputies who are truly good people with ethics and a caring personality, and yet we hear of alleged violent beatings, “gladiator” type fights – and sometimes the deputies film them. Six deputies and a sergeant went on trial at the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. I have been told the first job dep...

  • 'Sordid Lives,' a solid production, relies on themes of family

    Beth Lindly|Jul 24, 2014

By Beth Lindly Special to the Observer Local theatre troupe Kentwood Players' production of "Sordid Lives," a dark comedy penned by Del Shores, is a familiar, enjoyable piece of theatre. It unfolds like something I might have performed in high school, albeit more swear-filled. The acting was good in some parts. But this play's strengths don't lie in its artistry. "Lives" is ultimately a work revolving around themes of family and community, and every aspect of the production contributes to them....

  • MOVIE REVIEW: Transcendence

    debbie lynn elias|Apr 17, 2014

While there are many moments in which I was hoping to transcend the experience of screening TRANSCENDENCE, long after the credits rolled and I had left the theater, this freshman directorial effort by award-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister would not leave by thoughts. Screenwriter Jack Paglen tackles thematic issues of morality and mortality, humanity, ethical responsibilities, artificial intelligence, sentient beings, self-awareness, reasoning and in a large sense, taking the "God...
