Debbie Cahill's warm, colorful office at the Culver City Senior Center includes a creatively chaotic filing system. "My office is like an archeological dig," she explained. "If you want to know what happened 15 years ago, just go to the bottom of one of the piles and you'll find all the history of what we did." That is about to change, as Cahill is retiring on March 17th. "After 15 years of having the privilege and challenge of the position of Senior Programming Specialist at the Senior Center,...

The Cleveland Browns were unbeaten at home in 2018 heading into Sunday’s game with the Los Angeles Chargers. The Browns were 2-0-1 at home and looking like a team that could become a factor in the AFC Central race. They were coming off an impressive division home win over the Baltimore Ravens. That was until the Chargers rolled into Cleveland and crushed their hopes. Behind a running attack that averaged 6.8 yards per carry and gained a total of 246 yards on the ground, the Chargers rolled o...

However, they definitely have three things in common: an unquestionable commitment to presenting the best possible product to their customers; accolades and prestigious awards reflecting the excellence of those products; and a strong philanthropic streak coupled with a desire to serve the community. With 12,000 mini tacos and 3,500 mini burritos planned, Lynne Davidson, who runs...

By Ron Bassilian I suppose my name has gotten out a bit ahead of me. In the past few months I’ve gone from casual observer of Culver City politics, to concerned citizen, to specter of the "Alt Right" that the City Council must defend against in the interest of all things human. It’s gotten a bit out of control, a bit much for any mortal voter to bear. So, I figure you should all know a bit about me, the man who was behind the June 8th Brown Act complaint against our Council, and how a few simple queries on rent control and policing have met...
By Sandra Coopersmith "Elegance is not the prerogative of those who have just escaped from adolescence, but of those who have already taken possession of their future." Coco Chanel To find vibrant, outgoing and elegant women, you need look no further than the Culver City Senior Center, where seven very capable representatives impressed the audience and judges Sunday afternoon, May 20, as Culver City Senior Citizens Association and Culver City Exchange Club presented their search for Ms. Culver...

For those who read my commentary years ago remember I wrote about an experimental stem cell treatment to be used on patients with spinal cord injuries. It now appears Rancho Los Amigos will partner with USC to participate in a multi-million-dollar clinical study proving such therapy can restore key motor functions. I just reread the April 25, 2017 issue of Time Magazine. In my opinion the cover story should be read by everyone as it discusses the $13.9 Trillion United States debt and the...

Here’s my attempt at a rebuttal to Bruce Ander’s letter written November 30-December 6, 2017.With so many dozens of brand-new teachers with little or no real classroom experience having been hired by the district in the past three years, one would think that the district’s average cost of its teaching staff would be way down. But, if you check out the CCUSD/CCFT negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreements (on the district’s website under Fiscal Services) covering this and last school years (...

It's been far too long since Goldie Hawn graced the silver screen which, in and of itself, makes SNATCHED a welcome addition to this weekend's movie-going. But add the direction of Jonathan Levine and comedic antics of Amy Schumer and SNATCHED bodes well for an entertaining few hours of laughter in this mother-daughter caper of epic proportion. In spite of a lackluster script by Katie Dippold, which often feels like ideas were just thrown against the computer screen and whatever stuck was incorp...

Like the true legend that he has quickly become, JOHN WICK is back! Ready to allay our fears and be the lone voice of reason and revenge in a world gone crazy. While there's no holds barred high-octane adrenaline rush in this action-packed one-man wrecking team, John Wick delivers much more than an explosive non-stop annihilation of the bad guy; he has a moral code that makes him stand a bit taller, fight a lot harder, and endear himself even more to the movie masses in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2. In...
Would you believe? Would anyone believe? Awhile back a Georgia lawmaker, Gerald Greene (R-Cuthbert), was shot in the leg behind an adult entertainment store. Furthermore, Greene had several thousand dollars in donations for storm relief efforts in his pocket that the shooter didn’t get. Greene’s story claims he parked his vehicle and planned to walk to a nearby liquor store to buy lottery tickets. After being wounded Greene walked to the liquor store where the police found him. Greene des...

Words are just words. You think? While we may think we know what words mean, the stamina is in their associative power. (Think you know what stamina means? Please see below). Fuzzy, friendly words are popping up in politics. We see them and our eyes glaze; we think we understand, yet the landscape changes nano-momentarily. Here's a handy shortlist to test yourself. Post-truth It used to be "Truth justice and the American Way." Where is Superman when we need him? We're not in Kansas anymore. If...

You will think you’re at family dinner with the traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings in the recently remodeled restaurant. Soups, salad, yams, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries just the way Mom made it except without all the fuss and who could...
As if David MacKenzie's award-worthy "Hell or High Water" wasn't enough of a reason to celebrate cinema, and particularly the American western, Antoine Fuqua brings us the high octane stunning reimagination of "The Magnificent Seven." But now lauded horror genre writer/director/editor Ti West enters the corral with IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE, a real rootin' tootin' western but with a Ti West twist, proving yet again that the western is alive and well and very much beloved. As we saw with "The...
