By Lynne Bronstein Observer Reporter The second Culver City School Board's candidates' forum on October 14 had quite a different tone from the first one. It seemed a lot simpler to understand and much friendlier than most candidates' forums. Maybe that was because the questions lobbed at the candidates came from the stakeholders with the biggest concerns about school conditions-the students. The forum, held at West L.A. College's Fine Arts Auditorium, was produced by "Ask 2 Know," a program...

The Centaurs drove up the coast on Friday, October 2, to Port Hueneme to completely overwhelm Channel Islands High 54-30 with speed, line strength, big-play offense and another stellar defensive night from Mekhi Ware and company. Wright continued: "It was a long road trip and our goal was to go up...
By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist I am voting for Kelly Kent for Culver City Unified School District Board of Education on November 3. Last spring CCEF helped the Culver City High School Green Thumbs Club obtain a grant for $5,500 from the Richard B. Seigal Foundation. The grant made it possible for the Green Thumbs to put an automated drip watering system into their garden so that it's watered efficiently even when school is not in session. The grant also enabled them to install a new fence, which the students are staining themselves and new raised-bed garden boxes. The old boxes have been turned into tables and benches by...

By Fred Altieri Sports Reporter Culver City High girls volleyball has won the Ocean League title the past two years. But they are not resting on their laurels as they prepare for the 2015 fall season. Confident, eager and hungry, the Centaurs have their sights set on a CIF division championship. Under the three-year guidance of head coach Joe Manzo, the team has improved its won-loss record each season while compiling an overall record of 68-28. Equally impressive, they have won 21 of 24 league...
It's Game, Set, Match for BREAK POINT! For many, the game of tennis can be as boring as watching paint dry, or a ball endlessly bounce. For others, it’s an exciting, riveting, emotionally charged sport with nuance, intelligence and skill. What that means is that making a film set in the world of tennis is pretty much going to align with one of those perceptions. In the case of BREAK POINT, it’s definitely the latter as co-writers Jeremy Sisto and Gene Hong together with director Jay Karas del...
Scott: Kathy Paspalis has been on our school board for 5 ½ years. She has two kids who are coming into their junior year at the high school. They were at the Culver City middle school and at El Marino previous to that. SCHOOL BOARD RELATIONS Scott: Things seem to be going really well in the district and on the board. That hasn’t always been the case but I feel the board is really working well together right now. What’s going right with the board right now? Kathy: There aren’t a lot of personalities who are more concerned with their next office,...
By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist The Armed Forces History Museum in Largo, Florida is well worth a visit when you are in the Tampa Bay area. See www.armedforcesmuseum.com. The Justice Department collected $24 billion in criminal and civil penalties from banks and financial companies in the budget year ending in September 2014. Culver City has a ban on plastic bags, so why not have a ban on plastic food containers? The Chinese government confirmed 358 billionaires in China as of last...
Last year Culver City High had a rare down year. It was the first time they missed the playoffs since 2001. Head coach Jahmal Wright feels we should turn it around this year. Although the Centaurs are young this year they do have some experienced seniors on the O-line and D-line. Every coach knows that a good football team lives and dies by how well their offensive and defensive lines do. Coach Wright and his O-line coach Ralph Oliver and D-line coach Brandon Patterson feel that they have a good group of quick footed, athletes that should play...

The new synthetic lacrosse and multi-purpose field is finally complete and has been in use since June. The fall teams and most other programs have been practicing throughout the campus...

He was the 166th player selected overall. The ace of the staff, Mark played...
By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist So you think you have tax problems and perhaps you do, but it’s nothing like McDonald’s. Gabby Hayes would say, “No Siree, Bob.” I’m sure it was purely an oversight that the hamburger company supposedly shorted the European tax collectors by more than $1.1 billion from 2009 to 2013. Nobody should be misled when they hear the legislators are scraping by on only $97,196 per year. However, when all the benefits are factored in, I just bet it’s more than double...
