Let's just cut to the chase. BEN-HUR is masterful! A spectacle worthy of Cecil B. DeMille but with a story that is more grounded and layered with softer, nuanced, more human emotional performances that go beyond the visual (and visceral) experience and elevate the film into an eye-opener for the heart. Majestic in scope and message, what director Timur Bekmambetov and company have done is deliver a film for the ages. Being the classic film devotee that I am, and as my regular readers and...

"On Friday morning I woke up around 9:30ish and I was with my grandma and my grandpa on my way to go lifting weights. That's when I got the call. It was kind of out of nowhere so it caught me by surprise. Honestly, I was shocked, grateful and astounded," began Nolan Martinez. Bobby De Jardin (Southern California area scout with the New York Yankees) called me and said: "We just drafted you." I told him: "Really?" To get drafted by a team of this caliber with all of its great history... I felt...

The following Friday, May 27, Hooper qualified for the CIF California State Track & Field Championships again at Cerritos College by placing sixth at the California CIF Masters in the 200m event. Now a senior who is graduating this Friday...
The Culver City High Centaur baseball team had a remarkable 2016 season with a 21-8 record. They went undefeated in winning the Ocean League title. They finished with a flurry by winning 15 consecutive games before losing in the CIF Playoff Quarterfinal round. The Centaurs only gave up nine total runs in 10 league games and only 53 total runs in 29 games. It will be very difficult to improve those numbers regardless of their future success in any year. The program is stronger than ever with...

The game featured two of the nation's top high school pitching prospects: Culver's Nolan Martinez and Redondo's Sean Reynolds. The Centaurs were riding a 15-game winning streak while the Sea Hawks...
Are you a veteran? Have you been denied benefits or is your disability rating too low for your actual symptoms? The Inspector General for the Department of Veteran Affairs issued a report last spring showing its San Diego office had a 53 percent error rate and the Los Angeles office made mistakes on a whopping 71 percent of its claims. I must admit at first blush I was surprised to hear about the new legislation being pushed through New York City’s city council. The legislation, if approved, wou...

This was one occasion when the game took a back seat. On a perfect spring afternoon at Culver City High former head softball coach John Sargent and the late Rick Hudson were honored by the school on the very field where they spent a great deal of time coaching the Centaurs during their careers. Following the 2014-15 season Sargent, who coached the team for 26 years, decided it was time to hand over the coaching reigns well before this season began. The timing gave the school plenty of time to hi...

"I enjoy high school sports," said Altieri....
