The State of California will open the third veterans’ cemetery on 78 acres at Seaside in Monterey Country. Planned for 5,000 burial sites on the old Ford Ord reservation, it’s free for the veteran, but to bury a spouse or dependent children of an eligible veteran, a fee will apply. Sacramento is in the planning stage for the fourth cemetery, which will be in Southern California. Currently there are nine national cites operated by the Federal government, five of which are open for burials. Cal...
When I was a little girl, my mother would take me into the voting booth with her. There'd be three or four people sitting at a table with voter lists. We called them "Cake Ladies". Every election, they'd be sitting there with cakes in front of them. Last Tuesday, I was one of them. I'd volunteered to be a poll inspector in the general municipal election. Training for about 100 people took two hours. "Listen, First-timers: You'll love it!" the trainer said, then asked how many people had worked...
Leave it to Jean-Marc Vallee to deliver yet another emotionally intense and introspective character driven film. Leave it to Jake Gyllenhaal to once again put his chameleonic skill set to use to deliver yet another indelible and unforgettable performance. A film that goes against the emotional grain, toying with our own unspoken fears about "what if" and "waiting for the other shoe to drop", DEMOLITION manipulates, shocks and examines in a tapestry of unpredictability that is unusual, funny, emo...

It’s a political powerhouse this week at the theater as we are treated to David Gordon Green’s “fictional” OUR BRAND IS CRISIS based on the 2002 Bolivian presidential campaign, plus a documentary that strikes a chord on a global scale, INDIA’S DAUGHTER. A documentary from Leslee Udwin (now an advisor to the United Nations Human Rights Commission on the “Equality Studies Global Initiative” and recipient of the 2015 Anna Lindh Human Rights Award), the latter goes beyond the world shattering 20...
“One of the joys of dining out is you don’t have to bite off more than you can chew; you can always ask for a doggy bag.” ~ Sandra Coopersmith The Bachofner family’s Chalet Edelweiss, just minutes from LAX, was inspired by The Sound of Music and life in the Alps, one great mountain range stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany, to France in the west. This colorful mix of seven countries is reflected in a diverse menu of world f...
By Lynne Bronstein Observer Reporter The second Culver City School Board's candidates' forum on October 14 had quite a different tone from the first one. It seemed a lot simpler to understand and much friendlier than most candidates' forums. Maybe that was because the questions lobbed at the candidates came from the stakeholders with the biggest concerns about school conditions-the students. The forum, held at West L.A. College's Fine Arts Auditorium, was produced by "Ask 2 Know," a program...

By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist I am voting for Kelly Kent for Culver City Unified School District Board of Education on November 3. Kelly is the most qualified and has the best plan to formulate guidelines to benefit the students. Another asset she has is the ability to be an independent thinker who can ask the right questions. If you want the best choice, please join me with your friends and neighbors and vote for Kelly Kent. Just a reminder, the 10th Annual Taste of Soul Family...
It's Game, Set, Match for BREAK POINT! For many, the game of tennis can be as boring as watching paint dry, or a ball endlessly bounce. For others, it’s an exciting, riveting, emotionally charged sport with nuance, intelligence and skill. What that means is that making a film set in the world of tennis is pretty much going to align with one of those perceptions. In the case of BREAK POINT, it’s definitely the latter as co-writers Jeremy Sisto and Gene Hong together with director Jay Karas del...
I can’t remember the last time there was a weekend with two action films opening that had me this excited. The first, NO ESCAPE, solidifies what I first suspected back in 2001; that Owen Wilson does some of his best work when he goes “behind enemy lines”. The second, UNSULLIED, marks the directorial debut of former NFL star, Simeon Rice, and proves he is a winning force to be reckoned with both on and off the gridiron! NO ESCAPE Stepping out of their known comfort zone, with NO ESCAPE the Broth...
By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist One recipient of the Southern California Motion Picture Council’s 79th Annual Founders Day Golden Halo Award was Culver City Car Show’s “Mr. Good Guy” George Barris of Batmobile fame. Oh, my . . . My favorite steak house (when I was eating meat), the Buggy Whip on La Tijera Blvd in Westchester, has closed and the site will probably be apartments soon. One plan calls for 94 units and the most recent proposal calls for 39 studios, 45 one-bedroom, and 10 two-...

City Manager’s Office • Truth or Fiction Sculpture by Nobuho Nagasawa - Truth or Fiction was completed in 1995 and is comprised of three free-standing, triangular pillars made of laminated glass etched with images referencing Culver City's motion picture history. These images include MGM's Leo the Lion and an enlarged eye from Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound. At night, the sculpture is illuminated from within -- projecting moving phrases, images of native Southern California’s plants and anima...
It's been a half century since "The Munsters" first appeared on black & white TV' sets across America. Though many a schoolyard critic carped that Herman, Lily and their ghoulish parody of the family Cleaver – Beaver not Eldridge - was a goofy rip-off from a competing network - the silly sweetness of this short-lived sitcom (1964-66) has made The Munsters an enduring fan favorite. Like most TV shows of its era, cars were integral to the look and feel of The Munsters. Not surprisingly, Cruisin's...
I have never known the world without Paddington Bear. Born into the literary world around the same time as myself in 1958, Michael Bond's "A Bear Called Paddington" has been a mainstay of not only my life, but for generations of kids who came after me (including my nephews). Paddington Bear was just like me; he was a child. And despite all of Paddington's worldly education and manners taught him in "Darkest Peru" by his Aunt and Uncle, he had all the wide-eyed wonder, rose-colored glasses,...
