  • What Do High School Students Care About?

    Apr 19, 2018

Your high school teacher gives you a project: Find something important to you, then research the subject. Write it up, get it peer-reviewed by fellow students. Ultimately, students were asked to choose which subjects were most significant to them. Then take what you think is important, and write a compelling letter to the editor. Thanks to Culver City High School teacher Kathleen Rowley, and her ninth-grade students, we've decided to publish some the letters. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

  • Full Text of Mayor Jeffrey Cooper's Speech

    Mar 22, 2018

Thank you, Colin. And thanks to the Chamber for organizing this lunch. It has truly been an honor to serve as your Mayor for the past year. I would most importantly like to thank my wife Rafia and daughters for all their love, support and understanding as I served our great city for the last eight years. -- Earlier this month I represented Culver City at a conference in Austin, Texas, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where over 30 mayors from around the U.S. –and around the w...

  • Smart And Spicy

    Carole Bell, Observer Columnist|Feb 8, 2018

Love, timeless, ageless. But is it good for us? It can hurt. Surely you get that from country western songs. Moon, June, tune, spoon, it's all good, and then it's not. Is it truly better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all? If you're lucky enough to have someone to love, or something to love, then you are indeed lucky. "Could it be otherwise?" Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the American poet and San Francisco bookshop owner, once said to me, albeit in a different context. He looked...

  • Sunshine and Good News

    Carole Bell, Observer Columnist|Nov 2, 2017

I decided to spend my birthday soaking in good news. Sunshine and laughter: a lovely way to spend one's birthday. * In Quebec, a six-year-old autistic boy was so super-sensitive it hurt to have his hair touched. Franz Jacob, a barber, grabbed his tools, following the boy around his hair salon, even laying down on the floor when the boy did, to keep cutting. The boy's mother was so grateful, she put the barber's photo online. * Prison inmates around the world, competing to be the most compassiona...

    Neil Rubenstein|Sep 7, 2017

According to the New York Post, Wells Fargo’s reputation took another hit on Friday, April 22, 2017 when the bank admitted its practice of opening phony customer accounts started back in 2002 not in 2009 as first reported. For all you coffee drinkers keep your eyes peeled on the food store circulars, because coffee futures in New York driven by worldwide crop gluts touched a ten year low recently. Don’t get the person with the gavel upset; a judge said VW was guilty of deliberate and mas...

  • On the first night of two shows at the Hollywood Bowl, Dead & Company had a chemistry that was palpable.

    Steven Lieberman|Jun 8, 2017

On the first night of two shows at the Hollywood Bowl, Dead & Company had a chemistry that was palpable. As soon as founding Grateful Dead member Bob Weir started singing "Shakedown Street," the first song of the concert, audience members knew that they were in for a treat and a night filled with magic. Two other founding members on drums, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, got help from John Mayer on lead guitar and vocals, Jeff Chimenti on keyboards, and Oteil Burbridge on bass. I have a...

Perhaps you just know a member of the family or a friend who would like to be in law enforcement. Well, tell that lucky person to gas up his/her car and drive to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office in Florence, Arizona where there are 65 vacant positions. If you or your friends or your family could not come up with the money to get a second opinion on the DNA then expect to spend a long, long, long time locked up. For example, a man is suing two months in a sexual assault case because of a DNA m...

  • WINNING ISN'T EVERYTHING Culver Baseball Team Honors Opponent Killed In Car Crash

    Fred Altieri|Mar 30, 2017

Winning took a back seat in a Saturday afternoon baseball game at Culver City High on March 18. The Centaurs eventually outlasted a resilient and courageous South High Torrance team, 5-4. Earlier, both teams had gathered in the infield for a moment of silence before the first pitch was thrown. "South had a shortstop, Jesse (Esphorst, Jr.), who passed away in a car accident two weeks ago. They had a game that day and the next day he's gone. It's real sad. Our prayers go to his family and the...

    Stephen Hadland|Mar 30, 2017

It was a beautiful evening in Nice, France, last July 14 with 30,000 peoplewatching the fireworks celebrating Bastille Day, the French national holiday. Suddenly and without warning, a terrorist drove a 19-ton cargo truck through police barriers into the pedestrian zone of La Promenade des Anglais, mowing down dozens of spectators. • $100 Traffic Ticket Could Become $815 in California

    Mar 2, 2017

Has it been a year already that some hacker stole personnel details of 30,000 employees at the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI? Someone was asleep at the switch. It was in 1908, a year after my dad was born, that the New York City’s Board of Aldermen passed an ordinance prohibiting women from smoking in public. Everybody remembers from their American History class President Rutherford B. Hayes, but did you remember in 1879 he signed a bill allowing female attorneys to argue cases before the U.S. Supreme Court? Once again for the nin...

  • Mish-MashED: Do Your Job/ Don't Do Your Job

    Carole Bell|Sep 29, 2016

“NO OPERATING SYTEM FOUND”. Four frightening words you never want to see on your computer. Debuting on my screen yesterday; my beloved laptop is sick. Which explains why I’m sitting here in the library writing this. What, I’m not the only person who doesn’t have a spare computer just lying around? Yesterday’s grief brings today’s miracle: the library! They have computers (26 of them). They have laptops (yours for two hours). They even have a private room (small) (but with air conditioning)...

  • How About Hiring Women In Culver Fire Department?

    Neil Rubenstein|Sep 8, 2016

In November vote for our firefighters, our paramedics and our police and against the power-grabbing politicians who just want their $250,000 salaries and $200,000 pensions. It seems as though in every area of the human experience ladies are making headway. More and more jobs are becoming available and the salary gap is narrowing. Why, even the U.S. Navy SEALS will have females next year. So why is it that in the Culver City fire house in the past 100 years no progress has been made? That’s r...

  • America! How Ya' Looking, Baby?

    Carole Bell|Jun 30, 2016

I'm talking with M., a friend in England, about the hideous violence in Orlando. "Well, you know, it's America." he said. That bothered me. I launched into various rational reactions, but inside, I felt hurt. My country right or wrong, and all that? No, I wouldn't. Yet it's undeniable: people in other countries look at us as if we're aliens. OK, in the UK, no one is allowed to own a gun. The police don't carry guns. The news is not filled with gun violence. But we're the United States. There's...

  • Culver City Car Show Is A Success

    Stephen Hadland|May 12, 2016

The 13th Annual Culver City Car Show was a rousing success despite two major changes. First, the passing of Car Legend George Barris "The King of Kustomizers" who was a perennial figure at the show named after him. Second, the weather, each year the visitors are subject to the hottest day in spring. This year however the organizers were concerned about a rainout. The clouds gathered and dumped rain on other parts of the Southland but the show was spared with little more than a morning drizzle...
