  • Movie Review: Snitch

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Feb 20, 2013

I'm gonna be the first one to "snitch" on SNITCH. Knowing writer/director Ric Roman Waugh, brother director Scott Waugh and their dad, Fred, it was my privilege to not only work on second unit with Fred 30 years ago, but get to know Ric and Scott and watch them move from being stuntmen following in their father's footsteps, and then becoming first rate writers and directors - Scott with “Act of Valor” and Ric with films like “Felon” and now, SNITCH. While many believe that "stuntmen" turned...

And while there are plenty of hotly anticipated titles, the real delights are some indie gems that glisten and sparkle like starlight on freshly fallen snow. Filled with intensity, subtlety, nuance, allegory, poignancy and superb...

  • Movie Review: Red Dawn

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Nov 21, 2012

In 1984, the movie world was rocked by John Milius’ RED DAWN. Politically set in the Cold War era, WWIII had begun with Soviets invading the United States - and by Soviets, I mean from Cuba, the USSR and Nicaragua. In a small Colorado town, a group of teenagers calling themselves the Wolverines banded together to take a stand and save their homeland. Developing a cult following and beloved not only for the strength of character and confidence it gave to teens in a world gone mad, RED DAWN s...

  • Movie Review: 3, 2, 1...frankie Go Boom

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Oct 10, 2012

MOVIE REVIEW: 3, 2, 1...FRANKIE GO BOOM It’s been a long time since an honest-to-goodness, madcap screwball comedy hit the big screen, but thanks to writer/director Jordan Roberts the void is now filled. Demonstrating great flair for comedic panache with his zany, crazy and oh-so-fun, 3, 2, 1...FRANKIE GO BOOM (can we get an “amen”?), at its core a love story of eclectic proportions, FRANKIE GO BOOM is rooted in honesty, sincerity and heart, but spreads its wings with a sometimes raunchy charm...

  • Culver Council To State: Stop Fracking

    Lynne Bronstein, Observer Reporter|Jul 3, 2012

Resolution Requests Ban Some words send a stronger message than others. That was the conclusion reached by a majority of the Culver City Council Monday night. The Council voted to send a resolution to the state of California and California Department of Conservation, Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) to place a ban on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in state and local oil fields, and on the disposal of fracking wastewater by injection wells, until DOGGR adopts comprehensive...

  • Dear Editor,

    Jun 21, 2012

Thank you for covering the State hearing on Fracking. The outpouring of concern reflects what is happening in many parts of the world where people are beginning to suffer the ill effects of this risky unconventional process of oil & gas extraction. Now we need to show up again at Culver City Hall on July 2 to support our City Council and Staff to stand strong as our Leaders and demand the protection of the Commons (air, water, land) – the necessities of life itself. When the Industry says the process is 60 years old, they are playing with t...

  • Dear Editor,

    Jun 13, 2012

I wanted to add my concerns to Cary Anderson's regarding following the rules where it regards traffic incursion into the residential neighborhoods. For myself, it is not a matter of a rare instance of an organization holding a charitable event that brings outside traffic into my neighborhood. My block has had permit parking since 1982. The hours for enforcement were expanded about 15 years to match the hours of continued outside incursion. After all of these years I continue to request Parking Enforcement several times a week because drivers fe...

  • Dear editor,

    May 8, 2012

Did you see the 9th Annual Crusin’ Back to the 50’s Car Show ad last week in this publication? There was NOT any ad. From this year’s permit: "PUBLIC NOTIFICATION: The Event Operator will release at his cost, a Public Announcement notice in the local newspaper, that includes a map, two weeks before the event, to run once each week, providing informa...

  • Movie Review: Good Deeds

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Feb 29, 2012

Long an admirer of Tyler Perry and his works (with a few exceptions), I was curious to see what he would bring us with GOOD DEEDS, a film in which Perry sheds his usual onscreen persona of Madea and her over-the-top hilarity, and presents us with a man who, as I have come to learn, is the closest thing to Perry himself that we have ever seen. My curiosity is well-rewarded as GOOD DEEDS soars with emotion and is without a doubt, the best work that Tyler Perry has done to date; and by work, this...

Concerning the events (Culver City Car Show, IndieCade, a...

    Lynne Bronstein|Jul 15, 2010

Council Considers Charging in Free Structures Monday night’s council meeting marked the appointment of John Nachbar as the new City Manager. One issue that he may have to deal with in the near future will be the problem of parking in Culver City, especially in the downtown area. Parking was the issue for most people at Monday’s meeting. During public comment, Council meeting regular Cary Anderson presented a video slide show featuring photographs taken during the recent Culver City Car Sho...
