  • SHOWDOWN: Culver Nips Santa Monica

    Fred Altieri|Oct 31, 2013

By Fred Altieri Observer Reporter The moist air hung still in brief silence as the football carved a path through the thin late night haze. Seconds later, the kicker was mobbed by his teammates and the coaches walked taller as they crossed midfield to meet their counterparts. The home crowd rejoiced as the spirit teams, mascot and school band swarmed in post-game euphoria. It was a win for the team's seniors that were honored during a pre-game ceremony. It was a win that placed Culver City High...

Dear Editor, My three votes: Karlo, Claudia & Kathy Karlo has been an outstanding leader on the School Board over the past four years. He researches every decision thoroughly, getting input from a diverse group of parents and residents. A product of Culver City schools, Boston University, and Harvard, he went on t...

  • Dear Editor

    Letters|Oct 24, 2013

I strongly urge you to vote for Kathy Paspalis, Sue Robins, and Steve Levin for School Board. I am a former booster club president, high school parent, and perpetual volunteer who has attended numerous School Board meetings, forums, workshops, and meetings. Based on all of these experiences I know that Kathy, Sue, and Steve are the most qualified candidates in this election cycle. Kathy has shown through her performance on the School Board that she does her homework, is incisive, intuitive,...

    Letters|Oct 24, 2013

Dear Editor, Karlo Silbiger has won my endorsement. Now that I am finally of legal age to vote, I am proud to cast my first ballot in support of his reelection and I urge fellow Culver Citizens to do the same on November 5. In my time at Culver City High School, I witnessed an embarrassing absence of the student voice in the Culver City community. Critical issues have passed through the school board, meeting after meeting, without CCUSD reaching out for student perspectives or seriously investig...

    Fred Altieri|Oct 24, 2013

By Fred Altieri Observer Reporter The Culver City High student body summoned the gods Zeus, Poseidon, Ares and Hermes to honor their 2013 homecoming ceremony at halftime in Jerry Chabola Stadium. Hours earlier, there was a partial eclipse of a full mid-October moon. Hours later, there was a full eclipse on the football field as Culver City overshadowed Inglewood, 16-7. The Centaurs' fourth consecutive Ocean League victory dating to last season christened their inaugural league home game in...

    Letters|Oct 17, 2013

Put our kids first on November 5th – re-elect Kathy Paspalis and vote in Steve Levin and Sue Robins. Paspalis’ matchless work ethic and her training as an attorney are invaluable. Her oversight ensured that the District’s recent exciting capital improvement projects – new sports facilities and a solar initiative – were well managed and cost-effective. She is forthright, asks the tough questions, and is an engaged listener. Our District needs leaders; Kathy is just that. Steve Levin will brin...

  • Next Opponent: Inglewood (3-3)

    Mitch Chortkoff|Oct 17, 2013

By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor Inglewood has an array of spectacular athletes, led by receiver Zaire Andre, who has committed to Washington State. First-year coach Tony Reid has an outstanding offense that was dominant in a 49-0 rout of Beverly Hills last week. But the Sentinels have suffered several one-sided losses, including 50-12 to Burbank. This is Inglewood’s last year in the Ocean League. Next season it will move to the Bay League. ALSO ON THE WESTSIDE SANTA MONICA The defending O...

  • Centaurs Begin League With Victory

    Fred Altieri|Oct 17, 2013

By Fred Altieri Observer Reporter The year was 2013. The stadium said otherwise. And like a Dali painting, the football was warped by time. So began Culver City High’s Ocean League campaign. A win transposed within the weathered but friendly confines of Hawthorne High’s Halcap Field, named after South Bay legendary football coaches Hal Chauncey and Dave Capelouto, whom had nurtured the Cougars into a perennial powerhouse dating back to the 1950’s. Now the steady onshore autumn night breez...

  • Culver Kids Will Put Candidates On Hot Seat

    Oct 10, 2013

Elementary, Middle and High School students will question Culver City School Board candidates at a special ‘Ask 2 Know Kids Forum’ on October 29. For nearly 25 years, television personality Art Linkletter hosted a show where he interviewed children and shared their often surprising responses. Bill Cosby continued the tradition in the 1990’s with his program, Kids Say the Darndest Things. Well, kids ask the darndest things too. There’s a freedom from adult conventions that enables childre...

  • CCUSD's Future Looks Sustainable

    Lynne Bronstein|Oct 10, 2013

By Lynne Bronstein Observer Reporter The Culver City School Board heard from the CCUSD Environmental Sustainability Committee at its meeting Tuesday night. And like the U2 song playing as background for the committee’s video presentation, it looks like “a beautiful day” in store for the Culver City schools. Todd Johnson, the committee’s co-chair, is enthusiastic about the work that has been done so far. Regarding the video he said “[It] shows most of what we’ve been trying to do-all the excitem...

    Letters|Oct 10, 2013

The Friends of the Culver City Youth Health Center which provides free health care to students on campus, was invited by principal Dylan Farris to set up a booth at the high school for their Club Day. What an incredible event. We couldn't believe how well organized it was. The students set up what looked like about 40 booths in about 10 minutes, the event lasted 40 minutes, and then they broke it all down in five minutes. They were so hard working and so helpful. We were excited to be part of...

  • Centaurs Lose Again But See Hope

    Fred Altieri|Oct 10, 2013

By Fred Altieri Observer Reporter “We always like to schedule a heavy hitter and this year it was Bishop Amat.” And with that Culver City High football head coach Jahmal Wright closed the final chapter on the Centaurs’ non-league action for 2013. The Lancers from La Puente, perennially ranked in California and nationally, lived up to their billing and brought their fine act into Culver’s newly re-named and renovated field complex. But the final score of 48-26 in favor of the Lancers was a sidesh...

  • Get Ready: Lakers And Clippers Are Underway

    Mitch Chortkoff|Oct 3, 2013

By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor I went to Media Day at the Lakers’ training facility Saturday and the Clippers’ facility Monday. Get ready. Practice has begun and we’ll have NBA basketball until April followed by the playoffs that go into June. The Lakers will play an exhibition game at Staples Center Sunday at 6 pm against the Denver Nuggets. Annually this is the best time for me because nobody has lost a game yet and they all think they’re going to do well. But we know some teams won’t d...

  • Dear Editor

    Sep 26, 2013

I’d like to start by saying that I agree with Crystal Alexander’s statement, “It doesn’t take a union endorsement or a degree in education to make an effective School Board Member. Being able to make good business decisions do.” I want to thank the three School Board Members who made a good business decision by voting back in July not to put the school bond on the November ballot as it was proposed at that time. Crystal states that the City Council was smart for putting the Sales Tax increase...

The Culver City Education Foundation (CCEF) has launched its 2013-14 annual fundraising drive. • Centaurs Please Coach At Peninsula

    Fred Altieri|Sep 19, 2013

By Fred Altieri Observer Reporter Palos Verdes Peninsula is truly a paradise. Near the top of this gem rests picturesque Peninsula High in the City of Rolling Hills Estates sporting a classic grass football field adorning the campus’ north edge overlooking the greater L.A. basin. This was the scene of the Culver City High football team’s hard fought, explosive 41-27 victory over the Panthers in a rare afternoon game on a beautiful and sunny Friday the 13th. And this time it was 22 Centaurs tak...
