  • Dear Editor,

    Dec 27, 2012

What do Senator Diane Feinstein, Congresswoman Karen Bass and Senator Barbara Boxer have in common? Many of us could talk for quite some time about bills they've sponsored or supported and what they've done for California and Culver City. How many of us know that all elected members of Congress receive an annual salary of $174,000 for doing the people's work? I hope you are sitting down because we presently have (and there will be many more in the years to come) two retirees getting big time money. Mr. Cerris Black is getting over $180,000 and...

  • Dear Observer,

    Dec 27, 2012

Writing as a person who enjoys competing in sports and who regards himself as a devoted sports fan, I thank the Culver City Observer for having employed Mitch Chortkoff, who is one of the greatest sports writers of the last century. I have been reading sports pages since 1949 when Yankees and Dodgers played in the World Series. This was the time of the great radio announcers…Mel Allen with the Yankees, Red Barber with the Dodgers (who was joined a year later by Vin Scully), Curt Gowdy with the Red Socks and Marty Glickman, who announced the N...

  • Movie Review: Promised Land

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Dec 27, 2012

Timely and topical, PROMISED LAND speaks to your heart; it speaks to your mind; it opens your eyes to “the big environmental picture”; and although honing in on the one issue of fracking as a means to obtain natural gas, it takes all the environmental and energy movies and economically themed movies and brings it all together on one page that connects the dots of life. PROMISED LAND is tacitly and thoughtfully powerful and a “Must See” for everyone. Right here in Culver City, “fracki...

After 24 years on the job Bruce Smith has retired as Santa Monica College’s public information director. His last day was Dec. 21. Smith co-ordinated press information for all aspects of the college, and since SMC didn’t have a sports information director he doubled in that position too. The Observer and other local media outlets will miss his work....

  • Jenkins Succeeds As SMC Basketball Coach

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Dec 27, 2012

Jerome Jenkins, who became the Santa Monica College men’s’ basketball coach in 2008, has settled nicely into the job. Jenkins stepped into the grand tradition of Corsair basketball which was largely the work of legendary coach John McMullen and his players, who produced more than 500 career victories. After McMullen retired it was proper to wonder what would happen to the program. But Jenkins, a former all-conference point guard at LA City College, has established himself too. Jenkins arr...

  • Lakers, Clippers Bring Christmas Glee Here

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Dec 27, 2012

The Lakers aren’t among the four elite teams who figure to get the coveted top Western Conference seeds for the NBA playoffs this season. The Clippers are performing at an astonishing pace, but doubts remain about their ability to make their high-flying act succeed at playoff time. But on Christmas Day, both teams entertained sellout crowds at Staples Center and brought their fans a lot of holiday cheer. I arrived early for the Lakers’ noon tipoff. At 9 am there was already a lot of act...
