Culver To Follow County-Wide Trend “It’s going to be an anticlimactic discussion,” was Mayor Andrew Weissman’s assessment of the City Council’s reaction to an action item on regulation of plastic bags in Culver City. And it was somewhat anticlimactic, as the Council agreed unanimously on directing staff to draft an ordinance modeled on the Los Angeles County ordinance—banning use of single-use plastic bags in retail businesses and charging ten cents for each paper bag used. The unsurprisin...
Los Angeles councilmembers Paul Koretz and Bill Rosendahl announce their opposition to a proposed development along Pico Boulevard. The proposed Casden Sepulveda Project includes a mixed-use commercial and residential development. The project would include approximately 266,800 square feet of retail commercial floor area and 538 residential units. Developers say 59 units would be senior-affordable units. Councilmember Koretz explained "area businesses, homeowners and neighborhood councils all agree that this project is too large for this...
Laurie Newman—who formulated the original legislation (SB 1381) that created the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission (SMBRC) in 2002—has been named President of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation (SMBRF). A lifetime progressive and environmental activist, Newman worked 14 years for California State Senator Sheila Kuehl in various capacities, during which time she was instrumental in the creation of the SMBRC, laying the groundwork for then-Senator Kuehl to present the legislation. As Senator Kuehl’s transportation consu...

Recently I wrote several articles concerning excessive wages and benefits paid to senior city employees and retirees. Many residents have stopped me at various places to express surprise that many pension checks totaled well over $125,000 per year and some presently "on the clock" were getting over $300,000 in wages and benefits. Just in case you need additional eye openers (and I have plenty), Culver City has people getting over $40,000 in overtime and our taxpayers send approximately $900,000 each month to CalPers in Sacramento. But let us no...

Just today I saw the headline of the Culver City Observer for December 6-12, 2012; “Grizzly Suicide on West Washington” and thought that article looked interesting. I expected to read further and see something like this: Upon hearing of the demise of one of Culver City’s denizens, the Observer immediately dispatched one of its seasoned reporters to elaborate upon the circumstances. Our reporter learned from a neighbor that the bear had been feeling despondent lately. “He was feeling lonely and unhappy that no one of his species had been seen an...
With six losses in their first eight non-league games, the Culver City High boy’s basketball team doesn’t have the look of a contender for the Ocean League championship. Defending champion Santa Monica and Inglewood appear to be the class of the six league teams. But there’s hope for the Centaurs to have a successful season. Three Ocean League teams are assured of a CIF playoff berth and often a fourth or even a fifth place team is selected. The Centaurs don’t have a lot of size but the do have...
For as long as I can remember, the Yankees have been the highest-spending team in baseball. Taking advantage of the fact major league baseball doesn’t have a salary cap like the National Basketball Association, the Yankees have bought players without much consideration for a self-imposed limit. Oh, how that has changed. The Yankees didn’t go after the primary free agents in recent weeks as rumors circulated they’re trying to reduce their $210 million payroll to $180 million by 2014. Meanw...
