The Culver City High girls volleyball team was well on its way toward the CIF Championship match when things took a sudden detour a few nights before that. It happened just one block south of the 405 at Sawtelle and Palms on the Windward School campus Tuesday night, November 19. The top-seeded Centaurs fought valiantly on each point but came up short in losing to the Wildcats in straight sets 25-20, 25-19, 25-22. The girls held late leads in the first and third sets, had made a spirited...

Lorna Stamm was received into the arms of the Lord on November 10 in McKinney, TX. The youngest of four children, she was the last surviving child of J. E. and Alma Morris of Grand Island, Nebraska. During WW II, Lorna worked in the defense industry at Douglas Aircraft. She started out grinding lenses for binoculars for the soldiers. Later, she moved to the aircraft division where she checked the rivets on new airframes to ensure they were perfectly flush with the sheet metal. She often said...
I forgot to mark my calendar so I missed the November 5th birthday celebration of that wonderful actor, Joel McCrea. I see the first day of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving will be celebrated this year on November 28th. The last time this happened was 125 years ago in 1888. I don't know if my memory is correct, but I kinda remember in 1962 or thereabouts Hanukkah fell on December 25th. I guess the political pundits would say Rubenstein is a high propensity voter since he missed voting in only one elect...
It was with great sorrow that I discovered the recent campaign literature sent out to torpedo assembly candidate Sebastian Ridley-Thomas and paint him as nothing more than the product of nepotism. While my optimism still pines for the possibility that this was some momentary misstep in moral judgment on the part of Mr. Armenta, I find myself obliged to write today to clarify this misconception. Sebastian Ridley-Thomas is not just a tireless candidate seemingly everywhere at once, but he is also...

Now, by working with community partners, West is creating even more unique learning experiences for youth in a college setting. In October, for example, Culver City students filled the West Fine Arts Theater to grill the candidates running for the Culver City Unified School...

By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor As the editor of this newspaper I urge my columnists to take a stand on issues. I don’t tell them what stand to take, but merely let readers know their position. Readers have their opinions and want to compare them to yours. But today I find myself unable to take the same advice. Kobe Bryant has signed a two-year, $48.5 million contract with the Lakers and as the wisdom of the Lakers’ move is debated nationally I can very clearly see both sides of the issue. Fir...
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) projects the job market for medical assistants in Los Angeles County will increase 29.2% until 2018, with an average of 876 openings per year. The median wage for medical assistants in the county is $29,962. West Los Angeles College recently graduated its first class of medical assistant students and all who attempted the professional exam at the end of the program passed. As the next class approaches the mid-point of the one-year program,...
By Steven Lieberman Observer Reporter I know that Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi is smiling with pleasure from the beyond as The Verdi Chorus presented its fall gala concerts this past weekend in honor of his 200th birthday at First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica. The program, titled Viva Verdi, was dedicated solely to his works and included scenes and arias from many of his masterpieces. The night kicked-off with President Thelma Sherman and chorus consultant and musicologist Dr....
By Lynne Bronstein Observer Reporter November 22, 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of a dark moment in American and world history-the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th President of the United States. The events of that day, the shots that rang out during a motorcade in Dallas, have been the subject of numerous books, films, magazine articles, official government reports, and unofficial speculation. While the tragedy still has impact and continues to generate portrayals in the media...
West Los Angeles College will again offer a Winter Session, thanks to a return of more adequate funding to the accredited California community colleges. Most of the over 70 sections are transferrable to the University of California and California State Universities (e.g. UCLA, UC Irvine, CSUN, Cal State Dominguez) and other major universities. The 4-week winter session begins January 6, 2014 and offers a great way for community college students to get ahead and current university students to com...
By Cheryl Giraud Special to the Observer At this year’s Thanksgiving Day dinner, instead of asking for the mashed potatoes, you might say, “Please pass the latkes.” Or, at your Hanukkah celebration, you can break culinary traditions of fried foods and dine on, with its air of gravitas, roast turkey. Whichever floats your culinary boat, the centuries old celebration of Hanukkah begins at sundown next Wednesday, November 27, the eve of the widely celebrated American holiday, Thanksgiving Day....
By Bosmat Eynav Sports Columnist Matt Barnes is one of the strongest defensive players in the NBA, excelling through his entire career with his determination, efficiency, his blocking abilities, mental resilience and mostly by how much he cares about his friends. With his strong will, he is there for them at any cost. The Clippers' forward from UCLA will be there for his team members even when he has to sacrifice himself, his money and his time in the game. He's truly extraordinary....
Dear Editor, I’ve known Chris Armenta for over a decade. Having served with him for four years on the Culver City Council, I know his heart is in the right place. When asked if I would endorse his campaign for State Assembly, I did so without reservation. However, having seen a recent campaign mailer attacking his opponent, I am withdrawing my support. I have always set a high standard for my own conduct during campaigns. I never engaged in personal attacks, never condoned negative c...

Chris is a lifelong resident of Culver City. He has been educated in our schools, raised his own family here and served our community in so many ways that have benefited our lives. Experience and years of public service count, and when he is elected to t...
