The NFC West first place Rams (6-2) dominated with big plays, dispelling any notion of coming out flat following their bye week. The defense made an immediate impact on...

The Los Angeles Chargers have reached the halfway point of their schedule for the 2017 season. Their first half record of 3-5 is disappointing but a three-game winning streak did give Charger fans hope until the mistake-filled loss to the New England Patriots on the road. This past weekend was a bye weekend and gave the coaching staff an opportunity to do some much-needed self-scouting. As Charger head coach Anthony Lynn stated: "We're reflecting back on some self-scouting. Guys are doing projec...

  • Is Heritage Christian Really a 16 Seed?

Greg goodyear and Larry Weiner, special to the Observer|Nov 9, 2017

Is Heritage Christian Really a 16 Seed? By Greg Goodyear and Larry Weiner According to CIF officials the #1 seed always plays the #16 seed unless that team happens to be in their league. As the #1 seed Culver City drew 8-1 Heritage Christian as thier first round opponent. One has to wonder how an 8-1 team can be a 16 seed in any division? The CIF has a playoff formula that determines how the teams are seeded. However, as a #1 seed typically Culver would play either a wild card or a third or fourth place team in their respective league. Heritage...

  • Clippers Are Slumping: Should Their Fans Worry?

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Nov 9, 2017

For the last five years the Clippers have won at least 50 games and made the playoffs. Now Chris Paul has left them and after winning their first four games they’ve lost four of five. Ordinarily I’d start this column by saying don’t worry. They still have Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan and they’ve added Patrick Beverly. But some major changes are being made throughout the NBA these days and I think Clipper fans should be concerned. The Clippers’ 120-107 loss at San Antonio Tuesday night ala...

    Neil Rubenstein, Observer Columnist|Nov 9, 2017

Are you like everybody else seeing everything go up except wages? Can I mention the price of food, clothing, medical and let’s not forget gasoline or housing? Fortunately, Cousin Neil was driving on Overland between Washington and Venice Blvd when the red-light camera device caught my eye; as I drove past the multistoried construction project being built on the East side of Overland. You guessed right if you said, “Isn’t that in the City of Los Angeles? And you would be correct. Everyone who rec...

  • Gas Tax Increase With Novocain

Jon Coupal, Special to the Observer|Nov 9, 2017

Have you ever had a tooth extracted without Novocain or some other pain killer? When facing something painful, it's always helpful to apply a numbing agent and, when administered by competent medical personnel, anesthesia provides effective relief. But when politicians try to mask pain, be skeptical. The 12 cent increase in California's gas tax which took effect this week has garnered a great deal of media attention, much of it negative. That explains why California Democrats have tried to mask...

  • Imaginative and Historic

    Carole Bell, Observer Columnist|Nov 9, 2017

A good film entertains. A great film engages our feelings, and entertains; it teaches us. From Israel, Germany, Italy, and Spain, films beckon to our hearts. They call to us, at times as powerfully as the Greek sirens luring sailors by seduction. Sometimes a powerhouse film seduces as it goes on; the beguiling happens while we watch. At the Israel Film Festival, over 40 films and 30 filmmakers wiggle an index finger drawing you in. The diversity's delightful, and in theaters this week. Opening...
