    Letters|Oct 31, 2013

Dear Editor, The upcoming School Board election is an important one and I wish to share with readers my reasons for supporting the re-election of Kathy Paspalis. As a City Council member and as someone who regularly has attended school board meetings, I have had the opportunity to watch Kathy up close. I would describe her as decisive, focused and accessible. She has a tremendous work ethic but all of her actions are devoted to improving the quality of education for our Culver City kids. She...

    Letters|Oct 31, 2013

As a Culver City parent, I believe it is time to increase the separation between the teacher's unions and the people that make decisions, which impact teacher's unions. People forget that teachers are union members and are influenced by their unions. Parents are focused on what is best for their children. We are lucky enough to have parents running in our school board election, who despite their very busy lives, are willing to take time away from their own families to help run our schools...

    Letters|Oct 31, 2013

Dear Editor, I had heard from people working on Kathy Paspalis’s School Board re-election campaign that her lawn signs were being stolen from around town. Hers in particular, picked out at locations where there were pairs of two or sets of three signs. I thought it would be interesting to see what really was happening. I set up security cameras at a couple of locations. To view the results, go to YouTube.com and search for the channel “Culver City Politics.” It took no time to capture this...

  • Dear Editor

    Letters|Oct 31, 2013

Dear Editor, I want to urge everyone to vote for Sue Robins for the Culver City School Board for two reasons: 1. I met Sue when she was my daughter’s 8th grade science teacher. My daughter has behavioral and emotional problems due to her abusive background before we became her fost-adopt parents. Although several of the middle school teachers were sympathetic and helpful, none were as involved and involved us as Sue. She understood our daughter’s special problems and went out of her way to try...

Dear Editor, My three votes: Karlo, Claudia & Kathy Karlo has been an outstanding leader on the School Board over the past four years. He championed the solar project and Environmental Sustainability Committee, making our campuses greener every day. He's made the Board more transparent and responsive to the community. He researches every decision thoroughly, getting input from a diverse group of parents and residents. A product of Culver City schools, Boston University, and Harvard, he went on t...

    Letters|Oct 31, 2013

Dear Editor, I’ve been teaching adapted physical education in Culver City Unified for over 10 years and work with “special needs” children. I’m frustrated with how the district spends taxpayer money. Why not fix the pool for three million and use the rest of the 7.7 million on air conditioning, faulty plumbing, and contrast paints on playgrounds (Helps visually impaired children from being injured.). Examples of problems and where the money should go 1) Nurse’s station at CCHS 96 degrees (...

  • Sharman: One Of The Greatest Lakers

    Mitch Chortkoff|Oct 31, 2013

By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor Bill Sharman was one of the toughest men I've ever known. Also one of the nicest. When he became a Hall of Fame player with the Celtics stories were told that he used to help old ladies across the street from Boston Garden, then get into three fights during the game. "He never stood still on the court," said Bob Cousy, his Celtic backcourt partner. "So he was impossible to guard. And in an era when few guys played defense, he did." It was a different era then. A...

  • Clippers Cover Up Lakers' Banners

    Mitch Chortkoff|Oct 31, 2013

By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor Staples Center in Los Angeles is the only NBA arena shared by two teams. The Lakers have been superior for many years but the Clippers are regarded as the better team this season, and they're flexing their muscles. Coach Doc Rivers has decided to have the Lakers' championship banners and a tribute to their retired great players covered up for clipper home games. That doesn't include the opening game of the new season Tuesday night because the Lakers are the home...

  • "Doc" Arrives to Heal the Clippers

    Mitch Chortkoff|Oct 31, 2013

By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor Glenn Rivers played basketball at Marquette University where Al McGuire was the coach. I remember he was Glenn Rivers at the time so I recently asked him where "Doc" came from. "Al McGuire," he replied. He paused for a moment, then completed the answer. "He couldn't remember my name." That was a long time ago but the nickname has stuck through Rivers' NBA playing and coaching careers. And now Doc has arrived to heal what's been ailing the Los Angeles Clippers. Sp...

  • Ward Came to Police Station to Die

    Stephen Hadland|Oct 31, 2013

By Stephen Hadland Publisher It has become painfully obvious that David James Ward showed up at the Culver City Police Department headquarters early Saturday morning two weeks ago to end his life. No note was found and Sheriff Department investigators have yet to uncover any reason except that the City of Los Angeles was forcing him out of his makeshift home in his van where he had lived for decades just outside Culver City. Culver City Police Chief Don Pedersen remarked, "It is our belief, base...

  • Movie Review: Escape Plan

    debbie lynn elias|Oct 31, 2013

Classic! Classic action. Classic one-liners. Classic buddies. Classic action. ESCAPE PLAN is everything that we love about classic action movies and the genres high gods, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. And while I am the first one to admit to emotionally orgasmic fun with the Expendables crew, it's about time these two classic action legends join forces together one-on-one and eschew the scenery, muscle to muscle. It's action, story and stars like this that catapulted action to...

  • Movie Review: Sex Tax

    debbie lynn elias|Oct 31, 2013

Who hasn't heard of The Mustang Ranch? The most famous brothel in the United States, the Mustang Ranch stood proudly for decades in the Nevada desert catering to a diverse clientele base, including crews of many famous Hollywood westerns. Several years ago, Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci brought to life a fictionalized version of the Mustang Ranch story and its owners Sally and Joe Conforte in the Taylor Hackford directed Love Ranch. In Love Ranch, many moviegoers learned for the first time of the...

  • Dear Editor

    Letters|Oct 31, 2013

Dear Editor, I have three votes in the upcoming Board of Education election, and I plan on using all three. With one, I’m voting for Sue Robins. Sue has ALL the qualities that are needed for an effective member of a board of education. She has firsthand experience of being a teacher in the Culver City Unified School District. Culver City is far different from other districts and charter schools. Indeed, CCUSD is one of the reasons many of us (including my parents, and later I) chose to purchase...
