    Fred Altieri, Sports Reporter|Oct 12, 2017

Friday the 13th lived up to its unlucky reputation as Culver City High lost 33-14 to visiting Lawndale High in front of a capacity home-crowd at Jerry Chabola Stadium. The mid-October battle between the Ocean League's football powers featured the Centaurs' swift aerial attack against the Cardinals' dominant ground assault. Ultimately it was Lawndale junior running back Jordan Wilmore who stole the show with his dynamic and relentless rushing. He cut through the Centaur defensive line and punishe...

  • Another Win Gives Rams A 4-2 Record

    Fred Altieri, Sports Reporter|Oct 12, 2017

The Los Angeles Rams took another solid step forward under Head Coach Sean McVay. For the first time since the 2006 NFL season the 4-2 Rams have a winning record six games into the season after beating Jacksonville, 27-17. It was a game where the Ram special teams delivered from the opening kickoff until the final score. Pharoh Cooper returned the opening kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown as the Rams immediately and very temporarily stunned the Jaguars. Very temporarily as in 11 seconds later...

  • Kicker Nick Novak Helps Chargers Win Again

    Bill Seals, Sports Reporter|Oct 12, 2017

Back in early January of this year Nick Novak kicked a 50-yard field goal to give the Houston Texans an early 3-0 lead over the Oakland Raiders, a lead that the Texans would never relinquish on the way to a 27-14 playoff win over the Raiders. The loss eliminated the Raiders from the playoffs. On Sunday Novak's 32-yard field goal with no time on the clock gave the Los Angeles Chargers a 17-16 win over the Raiders in Oakland. This loss did not eliminate the Raiders. They are 2-4, as are the...

  • Rams Suffer Tough Loss

    Fred Altieri, Sports Reporter|Oct 12, 2017

Shooting yourself in the foot five times is a surefire way of losing in the NFL. That's exactly what the Los Angeles Rams did in losing 16-10 to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, October 8 at the Coliseum. It was a game they should have won going away. It was a game they almost won anyway. 60,000 fans were treated to a dramatic end as quarterback Jared Goff and the Rams drove the length of the field on their final drive to the Seahawk 20-yard line. On third down with eight seconds left in the...

  • Unbeaten Culver Rolls over El Segundo

    Fred Altieri, Sports Reporter|Oct 12, 2017

Culver City High football successfully began the 2017 Ocean League season with a 46-27 win at El Segundo High on Friday night, October 6, before a near-capacity crowd at intimate Hazeltine Field. The Centaurs took a 33-7 lead at halftime before an endless deluge of penalty flags bogged down the game, the players, the coaches and the fans in the second half. The two excellent football programs on the Westside deserved better. El Segundo took an early 7-0 lead on a 41-yard interception return for...

  • Chargers End Long Losing Streak

    Bill Seals, Sports Reporter|Oct 12, 2017

In a battle of two winless teams, a game that some billed as the crummy game of the week, the Los Angeles Chargers ended their nine-game regular season losing streak in an exciting and typically close fashion, beating the New York Giants 27-22 on a late touchdown at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. It was the first Charger regular season win since November of 2016. It was not a thing of beauty but it was a victory. The Chargers committed 11 penalties, gave up a safety for two points on a bad snap...

    Kay Douglas, Hockey Columnist|Oct 12, 2017

The 2017-2018 NHL season is set to begin. Can the Pittsburgh Penguins win a third straight Stanley Cup? Can the Los Angeles Kings actually secure a playoff spot? Will the San Jose Sharks be deep enough to get a Stanley Cup for Joe Thornton, set to play in his 20th NHL season and returning after major knee surgery? Can the Anaheim Ducks put a significant season together if they start with so many injured players? And can The Las Vegas Golden Knights be a contender in their first National Hockey...

Gilbert Monroe Miller, a longtime Culver City resident, passed away in September at the age of 80. Born on Feb. 2, 1937 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, originally as Gilbert M. • Where Is Respect for Life?

    Carole Bell|Oct 12, 2017

When the great Russian ballet dancer Ivan Nagy was asked if ballet dancing were as easy as he made it look, he confessed, "It hurts. It hurts," with a suffering smile and begging eyes. "It hurts." It hurts. It hurts to have a president who acts this way. It hurts that there are Americans who are thrilled to have a president who acts this way. Indelibly written on our minds and hearts: Puerto Rico. Las Vegas. Stained onto our consciousness: Donald Trump's actions and words. Behavior counts....

  • Council Delays Cherness Vote For A Year

    Neil Rubenstein, Observer Columnist|Oct 12, 2017

Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse the City Council’s pitcher threw a spitter high and outside. Most of us who knew his Honor Judge Harold Cherness to be honest, fair and just; a person who had the respect and admiration of the community upon his passing the Council said no tributes could be installed for at least one year. So, we waited and waited and waited some more; until a member of the Council said they were developing a new policy and there was no telling when this phase wou...

  • What Should We Expect From The Lakers?

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|Oct 12, 2017

I went to Staples Center Tuesday night. It was just an exhibition game but I wanted to see how much improvement the Lakers have made since Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka took over the difficult task of bringing back to life a once great franchise. I thought a game against Utah, which has rebuilt to become a playoff team, would tell me a lot. And it did. The game was close, the Lakers had leads in the fourth quarter but they lost 105-99. The team with more stars often takes over a close game and t...

  • Tennis Program Comes To Culver City

    Scott Wilson, Coach|Oct 12, 2017

I would like to share some information regarding our new tennis program here in Culver City. As a resident of Culver City with four children in the school district I looked into the middle school for what they offered for tennis. At the time, September 2016, there was no middle school tennis program and other than a small serving of classes being held through the parks and recreation, there was not much in terms of classes, teams or tournaments within Culver City. I am by trade a tennis coach/instructor. I have owned two tennis facilities and h...
