By Lynne Bronstein Observer Reporter The League of Women Voters tried "an experiment" in format at their October 1 Candidates Forum for Culver City's School Board. The result: a rapid-paced forum that kept the candidates on their toes as they raced through their responses. The format called for each candidate to have 20 minutes total time in which to answer questions given to all three candidates by moderator Julie Lugo Cerra. Three "timers" in the audience kept track of how many minutes had...

It is refreshing to learn that we in Culver City are blessed to have Dr. Kelly Kent, an Educational Neuroscientist, willing to serve as a School Board member. As a seasoned educator and psychotherapist for the past 30 years, I've witnessed the benefits my clients enjoy from applied neuroscience. We can too! How? Last year we voted to spend over $200 million (Bond + interest) to improve our schools. With Dr. Kent on board we will be able to maximize the benefits of this investment with the...

Our current board is hip deep handling the allocation of school bond funds, Anne and Scott are ready to jump in and join them. Through their involvement with the facilities assessments, bond workshops, and attendance at School Board meetings, Anne and Scott have really done their homework and understand the intricacies of the bond and the construction challenges ahead. As a member of the Citizens Bond...
By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist I am voting for Kelly Kent for Culver City Unified School District Board of Education on November 3. Kelly is the most qualified and has the best plan to formulate guidelines to benefit the students. Another asset she has is the ability to be an independent thinker who can ask the right questions. If you want the best choice, please join me with your friends and neighbors and vote for Kelly Kent. Just a reminder, the 10th Annual Taste of Soul Family...

My fellow taxpayers, we just left the School Board candidates forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters broadcast from City Hall. There are three candidates for two open seats. For about the last two years, by far the most important issue has been the passage of the bond. In June, 2014, by about a ¾ margin it passed successfully. The BOND measure allows the School District to spend $106,000,000 to upgrade health and safety conditions to protect our children and employees and to...
By Steven Lieberman Observer Reporter The Los Angeles Master Chorale, led by Artistic Director Grant Gershon, opened the 2015-16 season, its 52nd, on September 26 at Walt Disney Hall with “The Russian Evolution,” a program of sublime Russian choral works grand and intimate. The program also included the West Coast premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s seminal The Canticle of the Sun based on the nature-centric writings of St. Francis of Assisi and composed for chamber choir, percussion and virtu...
By Myke Williams Sports Reporter The UCLA Bruins were knocked off of cloud nine last Saturday when the Arizona State Sun Devils upset the seventh ranked Bruins 38-23 at the Rose Bowl. Just when you thought the Bruins were going to have one of the best seasons in school history along comes a bump in the road. The good news is Ohio State lost a game it was supposed to win last year and they went on to win the National Championship. So there is hope for the Bruins but it does not get any easier because they travel to the bay area to play Stanford...
By Myke Williams Sports Reporter The USC women’s volleyball team dream season got even better when it claimed the No. 1 ranking in the nation this week after beating No. 5 Washington last Sunday. Their 3-1 victory over previously unbeaten Huskies at the Galen Center on the USC campus proved that they are a special team. “What makes this team special is the new people we have this year,” said 6-2 senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio, who is probably the best player in the nation right now. “They work really hard and we have a lot of really...

Now in the heart of “awards season”, as the cinematic cream starts to rise to the top and the wheat separates from the chaff, the annual definition of “best” becomes clearer and the race for Oscar begins. But one category of film always seems to stand alone out of the fray and limelight and is quite often overlooked by not only distributors and theatre owners, but moviegoers - foreign language films. Each year, countries from around the globe chose one film from their country to submit for Osc...
Agustin (Gus) Prado passed away Monday, September 21 while disembarking from a 27-day cruise in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after suffering a massive heart attack. He was 74. Gus was born in Havana, Cuba on September 19, 1941. He immigrated to the United States in 1960 shortly after Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba. He owned Prado Signs in downtown Culver City which he sold over a decade ago so he could retire. He loved to travel and enjoyed his grandchildren immensely. "He would stop in the...
By Fred Altieri Sports Reporter The scoreboard was flashing constantly throughout the warm Friday evening at Jerry Chabola Stadium as Culver City High and Lawndale High lit it up for the 2015 Ocean League home opener on October 9. It was a grand offensive affair that saw Lawndale outlast the Centaurs 48-41 as both teams combined for over 1,000 total yards. The differences in both attacks were stark. Culver was effective by using the combined efforts of multiple players. The high-ranking...
By Steven Lieberman Observer Reporter The Los Angeles Kings hosted the San Jose Sharks as the home-opener opponent and the outcome was the same as last season, another Kings loss. Not a 4-0 shutout at the hands of the Sharks last season, but 5-1. Last season, the Kings had their Stanley Cup banner-raising ceremony before the game, so they might have been a bit distracted, but no excuse this time. It is the new-look season for the Kings. Former Kings goalie and backup to Jonathan Quick, Martin...
