All of us have heard on the radio or seen on television or read in the newspaper about law enforcement agencies doing bad things to good people. How many instances have there been when police and/or the court and/or the laboratory did something so evil that an innocent person spent as much as 10 or 15 or even 20 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit? Not here in Culver City!!! Personally, I would rather not have more efficiency in the police department if it meant punishing those who...

Most college fairs look to unite high school seniors with the colleges and universities they plan to attend the following fall, but in Culver City, the focus is one reminding students of all ages that they should be thinking about college. "We want to reinforce the idea that even as kindergartners, our students are thinking about college," said Superintendent Josh Arnold. "It's never too early promote the college-going culture for all kids, so it was great to see students of all ages,...
On a deeper, personal level, I don’t like how Colin Kaepernick is using his stardom for social protest. That said, most of us don’t like to have someone else hold a mirror up to us to show our flaws. And in doing so, Kaepernick is trying to prod us into doing something we would rather not acknowledge or even think about. Most of us tend to protect ourselves by looking past the everyday societal reflections we encounter without ever stopping and really looking at them--mostly out of fear of how we will see ourselves. So, we go on with our daily...
Dear Editor: We won. We exposed the ineptitude, incompetence and lack of ethics of the Culver City City Council. We exposed that, in Culver City, influence peddling trumps reason and justice. Ken Smith, a prominent member of Grace Church, has given new meaning to the phrase, “Ask and You Shall Receive.” We exposed Smith’s business, social and political relationships with former City Council member Andrew Weissman that Weissman conveniently forgot to mention. Apparently, in Culver City, bias greases the wheels of progress. That is, progr...
The USC and UCLA football teams are preparing for something very important. USC will play Stanford Saturday. UCLA will play Stanford the following Saturday. Last year Stanford beat USC, then beat USC again in the Pac-12 Conference championship game. Stanford has been the Pac-12 champion in three of the last four years and has Heisman Trophy runnerup Christian McCaffrey returning. Stanford has beaten UCLA for eight straight years, including a 56-35 rout last season. So, although UCLA will be...
It was good ol' fashioned home cooking and plenty of offensive firepower for Culver City High Football on Friday, September 9, at Jerry Chabola Stadium. The Centaurs rolled up 35 first quarter points on the visiting Torrance High Tartars and cruised to a 49-14 victory in their 2016 home opener. The Centaurs racked up a whopping 711 total yards on offense under the direction of quarterback Jonathan Martin, the rushing of Brandon Oum and Kevin McGuire and the receiving of Charles Ross, McGuire,...
UCLA and USC play important road games Saturday after winning their home openers last Saturday. The Bruins beat UNLV 42-21 and the Trojans exhausted Utah State 45-7. Both teams will need to be at their best when UCLA travels to Utah to face BYU and USC has a date on the Farm when the play No. 7 Stanford in Palo Alto. Stanford is led by consensus All-American, last season’s Rose Bowl Offensive Player of the Game Christian McCaffrey. He ran for 2,019 yards last year and became the first player i...
You wouldn't wish a game like this on your worst enemy... unless of course you're the San Francisco 49ers and you've just humiliated the new Los Angeles Rams 28-0. It happened in the 49ers' home-opener at Levi's Stadium during the second featured match of Monday Night Football. The Rams looked like a team that never made it out of the locker room except during the pregame warmups to check out the windier and cooler conditions. Their virtual absence also helped the 49ers look like a legitimate...
The Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA will end their regular season against San Antonio tonight (Friday) at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Sparks are 25-8 and securely in second place going into the eight-team playoffs. After the Olympic break the Sparks had some problems recapturing their winning ways. Last Tuesday they looked like the team that set WNBA and Sparks records before the Olympic break. They beat a good Phoenix Mercury team 90-85. Against the...

There is more than light between oceans in this latest film from writer/director Derek Cianfrance. Stedman's 2010 bestseller. The richness of the story swells and surges to life thanks not only to exquisitely strong and impressive visuals, but complex enigmatic...
Holy mother of God! You won't believe your eyes and ears when you watch BAD MOMS! It's moms-behaving-badly in this raunchy, riotous ridiculum of side-splitting hilarity. And although not a perfect film, it is the perfect antidote for a case of the mid-summer doldrums or whatever ails you. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn star as our seemingly less than perfect "bad" moms - Amy, Kiki and Carla, respectively - who are trying to do it all but sometimes fall a bit short, while Christina...
