  • All for 1 Campaign – A Great Team Effort

    Aug 29, 2012

All for 1 Campaign – A Great Team Effort Many times over my long career at Culver City High School, I was aided in stimulating my students and improving my curriculum by funding from the Culver City Education Foundation (CCEF). The benefits of this excellently administered organization cannot be overstated; its focus is on students and ways to broaden and reinforce their learning experiences. As a school board member, I have seen the results of CCEF’s support for programs such as SuccessMaker and Odyssey at the elementary and middle school lev...

  • Dear Editor

    Aug 29, 2012

As a veteran I proudly salute Marcus Tiggs for his "A Different Look at Measure Y" (Aug. 23-29 2012 issue of Culver City Observer). I have received requested public documents from our City Hall and Sacramento and, much to my surprise, I discovered the following: 1. In 2010 we had nine retirees who each received monthly pension checks of over $10,000. 2. As of this spring it was 24 retirees each getting over $10,000 per month. 3. Presently our little city of 40,000 has over 550 retirees getting a total of well over $1,500,000 per month. 4. In...

    Aug 29, 2012

The Westchester 14U Babe Ruth All Star team has made it a habit of winning when necessary, having faced numerous "Win or go home games"in the World Series. But the team was eliminated in the semi-finals, 9-8 by the No. 1 seed, New Jersey. Last Friday night, amid the pomp and circumstances of the World Series semifinal, Westchester found itself, yet again, in an elimination game. New Jersey earned the number one seed in the National Division with a 3-1 record (the same record as Westchester) and a first round bye. Manager John Lopatto chose...

  • Dodgers Are Better, But How Much?

    Mitch Chortkoff|Aug 29, 2012

Mitch Chortkoff We don’t know how well the Dodgers will do this season but we do know their new owners are committed to spending whatever it takes to field a successful team. The blockbuster trade last week was a statement to every rival and to Dodger fans. The Frank McCourt era is most definitely over. The new owners said they’d be in on everything, meaning trades, free agent acquisitions and giving their own star players generous contract extensions. So the Dodgers now have Adrian Gon...

  • ‘Elephant Room’ Will Make You Laugh

    Mitch Chortkoff|Aug 29, 2012

Observer Editor Having reviewed several Douglas Theatre thought-provoking plays over the years, I went to Elephant Room on opening night realizing this would be different. Three semi-pro magicians. Magic tricks. Nothing very serious. Two days later, when I began writing this piece I struggled to locate a serious theme. Then I gave up and came to the obvious conclusion. This was a fun night out. Nothing more. But there’s nothing wrong with that. The theatre in Culver City has 317 seats and e...
