  • Locked Up For 36 Years, Innocent Man Sues

    Neil Rubenstein|Aug 11, 2016

Do you remember several articles printed long ago? They were so unbelievably funny or just so very informative that they bear repeating. Therefore, you may see some references that seem familiar sprinkled throughout this column. I just bet students who read the rankings of colleges and universities would be pleasantly surprised how well the military academies stock up – and for graduates it’s free. In most institutions of higher learning grads take the diploma with their right hand and the...

The Rams gave up an early 7-0 lead but scored two touchdowns to take a short-lived lead. Running back Todd Gurley, playing in his first preseason game for the Rams, had four carries for 20 yards and scored the Rams' first touchdown up the middle for three yards. Starting L.A. quarterback Case Keenum...

California Chrome. What else needs to be said? Two years after running away with the 2014 American Horse of the Year honors the chestnut-hued thoroughbred with four white feet is still sending Southern California horse racing fans into a screaming frenzy like few others can. "We're coming into the race good and hoping that we have a good trip. You're always worried the first time back off of a layoff. California Chrome has been training forwardly and he's won a lot of races doing that," said...

  • Rams Beat Cowboys in Preseason Opener

    Fred Altieri|Aug 11, 2016

It will simply go down in the books as a 28-24 preseason win for the 2016 Los Angeles Rams over the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, August 13. But it was much more than that for the 89,140 fans who joyfully poured from the exits of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum following the come-from-behind victory. "I just left the locker room five minutes ago, finishing up with the team, and I had to remind them that it was a preseason game. It was as if we just clenched the playoffs as far as they were...

  • Clippers May Leave Staples Center, Not LA

    Mitch Chortkoff|Aug 11, 2016

The Clippers' lease with Staples Center runs until 2024. So they aren't going anywhere else until then. But there are rumors that the Clippers will leave. And runaway rumors must be addressed. Here are the facts. The Clippers are unhappy about being the third tenant in Staples Center, which results in them getting the third choice of dates and starting times behind the Lakers and Kings. The Clippers are especially annoyed by getting Sunday afternoon games while the Lakers play on Sunday nights....

  • Local Hero Buford Still Giving Back To LA

    Aug 11, 2016

The world and especially Los Angeles is a better place because of people like Don Buford. The former major league baseball star is still an energizer bunny at the age of 79. When most people his age are working in the garden or playing golf Buford is running local youth league programs, speaking at local colleges and throwing out the first ball at local baseball events. “I feel very fortunate to still be thought of as a local hero,” said Buford after he threw the ceremonial first pitch for the West Side All-Star Classic at West Los Angeles Col...

  • The Speculation Was True: Dodgers Dump Puig

    Mitch Chortkoff|Aug 11, 2016

Speculation about Yasiel Puig's future with the Dodgers was strong enough for me to write about it last week. It turned out to be accurate. When the Dodgers flew to Colorado Monday to begin a series against the Rockies Puig wasn't with the team. The Dodgers had told him they would trade him by the Monday deadline or send him to the minor leagues, which they did Tuesday. Sources told me the Dodgers decided they needed more production from their right field position. On Monday the Dodgers...

  • Feeding Speedy

    Aug 11, 2016

The Culver City Woman's Club volunteered during the Summer Lunch Program held at La Ballona Elementary School in July. CCWC member Chris Metoyer brought her pet tortoise, 60-year old "Speedy", who was a huge hit with both the children and their parents! The craft project of making personalized bookmarks was fun for all. In the picture are Chris Metoyer and some of the children watching Speedy eating. (Photo by Barbara Rainier)...

Get ready to celebrate Culver City's Centennial with a special story time at the library with Mayor Jim Clarke on Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m. The Mayor will be reading the children's counting story, One Hundred Hungry Ants by Elinor J. Pinczes in the Community Room of the Culver City Julian Dixon Library. This fun tale should get us all in the mood for the 100th birthday of Culver City. Mayor Clarke will be able to give an update on some of the festivities being planned for this year-long celebration. A fun, 100's themed craft will follow the...

  • How to Escape from Political Clutter

    Carole Bell|Aug 11, 2016

Stop it! Now, stop it, will you? We're being bombarded from everywhere: Trump. Hillary. Bernie. Republican. Democrat. Green. (All of the above). Isis or WasWas? Fear, anxiety, disquiet; pushback to fear again. It's the clutter, Stupid. Make it stop. There's a truck with the words "Clutter.com" on the side; they come to your house and pick up your clutter, take it away and keep it for you. You don't even have to go there, or arrange it in storage. When you want your things, they'll bring them,...

  • Dear Editor:

    Letters|Aug 11, 2016

Dear Editor: This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending both of the plays put on this summer by the Culver City Public Theatre. The first is "Frog Tails" written by our own local playwright, Eric Billitzer. What a delightful, lively and well acted story. The children in the audience were especially enthralled and engaged by all of the characters, and there were plenty of laughs for everyone. The second production was William Shakespeare's "As You Like It". I have seen this play performed...

The Los Angeles Rams 2016 training camp opening was well worth the wait for the thousands of fans sporting blue and gold. Enthusiastic crowds engulfed the training field located on the campus of the University of California, Irvine hoping to get a glance and perhaps even an autograph from their favorite players. The Rams will be training at UCI through the month of August until the last day of camp, Tuesday, August 30. According to Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher "their facilities are top-notch."...

  • California Chrome Dominates in TVG Pacific Classic

    Fred Altieri|Aug 11, 2016

California Chrome ridden by Victor Espinoza sprinted from the starting gates, blew away the field and coasted to victory in the $1,000,000 TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar Racetrack on Saturday, August 20. The potential trouble for Chrome, running out of post position No. 1, never materialized in a field of nine that included Beholder, last year's Pacific Classic run-away champion and Dortmund who lost by just a half-length to Chrome four weeks ago in the San Diego Handicap on the same track. The...
