By David W. Myers, Contributing Editor A 57-year-old Westside man apparently took his own life earlier this week outside the landmark Sony Pictures Plaza building in Downtown Culver City, according to police officials. Officers were called to the scene on the side of the building that runs along Culver Boulevard shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, Culver Police Lt. Ron Iizuka said. There they found the body of the man, hidden from the view of passing motorists by a tall hedge. Iizuka would not immediately identify the man, but said he lived near...

Last week 95-year-old actor Kirk Douglas said he is pledging $50 million to five organizations around the country. The exact amount that will go to each has not been disclosed but a portion will go to the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. The actor has provided the theater with an endowment for the development of new works. The space is run by L.A.'s Center Theatre...
This month at our regularly scheduled Culver City Democratic Club meeting Mayor Weissman gave us an overview of the budget problems and elicited comments re same. The way it was presented felt like it was an "act of God" that had befallen us and we just had to tighten our belts and deal with it which we are willing to do. However, I mentioned that our city and many other municipalities, states and the federal government were all ripped-off by crooks in suits on Wall Street for trillions of dollars. Few, if any, are being prosecuted and I...
In this day and age, especially, and from those of us non-perked, non-pensioned, non-civil servant, we must be very careful to ask where the tax money goes, and where increased tax money goes in those respects. M. Lessen Culver City...
West Nile Virus Hits Culver Again A dead bird (American Crow) collected in Culver City has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). WNV is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they first feed on birds that carry the virus, and then bite a human or animal. Birds routinely travel many miles from their nighttime nesting locations to feed and scavenger during the day before they return to their root location in the evening again. Although positive birds collected in a specific area are significant...
How refreshing to read an editorial stating we need to reduce city expenses rather than raise taxes. (Chamber Wrong in Rush to Support Tax Increase, July 12, 2012) There are currently 450 Culver City employees making over $85,000/year when you include overtime, benefits and retirement. When will the liberal democrats running this city realize that raising taxes doesn’t work? Raise sales tax in Culver City and customers will shop elsewhere. What happened to the Republican idea of cutting expenses and lowering taxes. That’s what I have to do in...

The Lakers have created headlines by acquiring Steve Nash and pursuing Dwight Howard. But quietly, the Clippers have been doing everything right, and right now they have a superior roster. It’s only the beginning of August, so expect more changes. But take a closer look at what the Clippers have done in this off-season. They’ve brought in four-fifths of a second unit, acquiring the quality depth they lacked last season. And they’ve re-signed starter Chauncey Billups, who is recovering from the i...

USC, which lost several football players two years ago when the NCAA penalized the Trojans, got one back this week. Silas Redd, a running back who gained 1241 yards and scored seven touchdowns for Penn State last season, left there and has two years of eligibility left for USC. He is the highest profile player of several leaving Penn State following the NCAA’s harsh penalties to the school, including letting players transfer without sitting out a year, in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child a...
