I would like to express our deepest apologies for our web site being down for maintenance. We are back up now and fully functional. The site will be completely updated with important new stories no later than Saturday. I have received many calls and inquiries about the website. I was gratified to hear our reader consider the Culver City Observer website to be the most important source of news in our city. Our staff will continue to bring the residents and businesses the important news and...

    Jul 14, 2016

The City of Los Angeles has in recent years lined the edges of Culver City with large projects dwarfing over the 40 foot height limit imposed by Culver City voters decades ago. Now comes a project so massive it could easily destroy the "small town" feel of Culver City. Crenshaw Subway Coalition and Friends of the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative have filed suit against San Francisco Bay Area real estate developer (CP V Cumulus) a subsidary of Carmel Partners and the Los Angeles City Council to...

    Jul 14, 2016

Right in the heart of the classic motion picture studio district "Screenland" comes a revived art form of theatrical revue. With laughter, drama and song, this is the whacky world of "The Bucket List Actors. " It all started as a group of once were, or wanna be actors and performers, started meeting in Culver City two years ago. • Unlike Kobe, Tim Duncan Retires Quietly

    Mitch Chortkoff|Jul 14, 2016

Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan are future NBA Hall Of Fame players. Both have retired and both are properly being lauded for their accomplishments. But they are different kinds of people. Bryant embraced his last of 20 Laker seasons by agreeing to an elaborate tour where he willingly met with the media in his final game in every city. Duncan retired Monday after 19 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. He treated his final season like the other 18. He played unselfishly, said goodbye and didn’t e...

  • Want To Be Understood? Make a Movie

    Carole Bell|Jul 14, 2016

A friend once stood with me inside a closet. I forget right now why we were in the closet. Oh! She was showing me her breasts, and didn't want to do it out in the open convention room. She wanted me to see that she had breasts, since when we first met, she had been a man. Her life, and the things that happened to her, were hard enough. Yet thinking back on that moment, I realize now, it would have been even harder had she also been black. We think some truths are universal, applicable to...

  • Two Superstars Are Better Than One For The Sparks

    Steve Finley|Jul 14, 2016

If you follow the history of basketball a few things are perfectly clear. If your team expects to win a championship you need at least two superstars to complete the journey to the top. The Lakers had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson and Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. The Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA have Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker. Like any championship team every player on that roster plays an important role in that team's success. All 12 women on the Sparks roster are...

  • MOVIE REVIEW: CAFÉ SOCIETY

    debbie lynn elias|Jul 14, 2016

Once again, Woody Allen sweeps us up into the magic, elegance, glamour and excitement of an era long past with CAFÉ SOCIETY. But that's where the "once again" part ends as Allen pushes himself beyond his patented funny and delivers a film with emotionally resonant characters (but still dealing with myriad neuroses) and a story as rich as the film's visuals. Filled with bittersweet poignancy, heartbreak and humor, a tinge of melancholy laced with a longing for days gone and a wistful wondering...

  • Bud Furillo, The Steamer; A Great Read for Sports Fans

    Mitch Chortkoff|Jul 14, 2016

If you're relatively new to Southern California you probably won't get much out of this column. But if you're an old timer you might want to be reminded of the accomplishments of Bud Furillo, who covered sports in his unique way here for about 60 years before he died in 2006. For a long time Jim Murray was the gifted sports columnist of the Los Angeles Times and Furillo was the dynamic sports editor of the now defunct Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. Besides presiding over the Herald's sports...
