By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist I was scanning a California history book and came across Hong Yeng Chang. The State Supreme Court in 1800 denied Chang’s application to practice law because of the federal Chinese Exclusion Act even though he studied at Yale and graduated from Columbia Law School in 1886. You just have to love the Los Angeles Police Department unless you just happen to be a taxpayer. Perhaps everyone remembers the paragraph in this column when the officers were given t...
By Steven Lieberman Observer Reporter During the season-opening concert on Saturday at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank, I closed my eyes and listened to The Fab Four sing a Beatles song and thought that the boys from Liverpool had transported themselves back from the '60's. That's how accurate and authentic their sound is – arguably the world's best Beatles tribute band. It's the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, so it was apropos that The Fab Four brought a...

By Lynne Bronstein Observer Reporter The hazards involved in examining the finances of Culver City were avoided on June 23 when the City Council, without much ado, approved the 2014-2015 budget. However, the Council took some time to discuss the potential hazards posed by the planned Fourth of July fireworks display at West Los Angeles College. The fireworks issue was raised during public comment by a speaker who was concerned that the fireworks were set to be detonated close to gas and...
The annual Fourth of July Fireworks show will be held at West L.A. Because construction continues at the high school, this annual local and family tradition has been moved to the football field at West Los Angeles College. "Our fireworks...

When we last saw the gang back in 2012, they were hanging out in downtown Culver City, shooting hoops, hitting Happy Hour at Rush Street and wrecking havoc and hilarity at every turn in "Think Like A Man". This was his third straight scoreless start, capping off a career month in June -- six wins, a no-hitter, a 0.82 ERA, and a streak of 28 scoreless innings. It's the longest scoreless streak by any pitcher in the Majors this...
