Honoring Albert and Ursula Vera The city is currently developing plans to rename Bush Way next door to Sorrento Market to honor the memory of Albert and Ursula Vera. Prior plans to name the Culver City Senior Citizens Center after the Veras appears to have been scuttled. This is a nice start but does not begin to honor them in a way that fully represents all they did for Culver City, and humanity. Ursula was not a political figure. She did for people out of the goodness of her heart. No one ever left Sorrento Market hungry even if they...

French Toast for The World’s Best Mom As kids navigate their way through the annual celebration this Sunday making mom “belle of the ball,” one of the best gifts she can get is a well-deserved day off from her usual routine. This Sunday the world stops to say “Happy Mother’s Day.” It’s the day in which mom is honored and showered with extra doses of love, gratitude and probably some much needed rest. The 99-year old official observance of Mother’s Day began in 1914 when President Woodr...

It takes leadership, understanding, preparation, practice, patience and execution to secure such a date with destiny. Defending Ocean League baseball champions Culver City High walked the walk once again by high-stepping Morningside High with two more league victories last week by scores of 16-0 and 11-1. • Clippers Blew An Opportunity of A Lifetime

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|May 9, 2013

It was all there for the Clippers – the opportunity of a lifetime. After playing in the shadow of the Lakers ever since they moved to Los Angeles in 1984 the Clippers had at long, long last overcome their misery. They won 56 regular season games, beat the Lakers in all four meetings, won their first Pacific Division championship and drew sellout crowds for every home game. Meanwhile the Lakers floundered, barely made the playoffs and then lasted only one round, losing four straight games to t...

    Mitch Chortkoff, Sports Editor|May 9, 2013

For two years Chris Paul has been a model of what every NBA franchise would like to have. Actually he’s been that guy much longer. But I’m only talking about his time in Los Angeles as the dynamic point guard of the Clippers, who badly needed his leadership following countless mistake-plagued years as an underdog franchise. Paul played brilliantly, ignoring the Clippers’ past problems and never talked about leaving when he became a free agent. But he’s a free agent now. Why would he leave?...
