  • American Spiral of Shame?

    Carole Bell|Feb 18, 2016

I'm sitting in a classroom in Vienna, Austria, in a German class I took years ago. Teacher asks: What does your country do for poor people? Everyone's from different countries; I'm last. All the others tell how their countries help, even those from poor countries. They look at me expectantly. We didn't do much for poor people then; I didn't know what to say. 10 people stared me down - the only American - with pity. I felt real shame. Shame's fueling the 2016 Presidential election. • What May Happen In This Baseball Season

    Mitch Chortkoff|Feb 18, 2016

The Super Bowl is over. The NBA took a mid-season break. Baseball is on my mind today. Spring training has begun and my memories are vivid of the 12 times I went to Dodgertown in Vero Beach to cover the start of another season, It’s a great time of the year because of the optimism it creates. No team has lost a game yet.. They all think they won’t lose many. A sportswriter loves an opportunity like this where players are open to be interviewed. They’re not grumpy like many are during the seaso...

He was your friend, he was my friend, and he was our friend. He was Lester “Les” Silverstein, the man with a crazy sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. We kept each other laughing; sometimes the giggles would be out loud, other times expressed by a big smiling grin. We first met in the Culver City Senior Center in the summer of 2000. Having just retired from the Boeing Aircraft Company, I decided to check out what programs were available. Out of the blue I heard a voice say, “Take this,...
