By Lynne Bronstein Observer Reporter Jeff Cooper After spending the most recent year of his council membership as Mayor, Jeff Cooper considers his first term in office as one of many accomplishments. In his recent address at the Mayor's luncheon, Cooper noted: "Just a short time ago, we were on pace to out-spend our reserves in just three years....our city is socking away more reserves and pre-funding our pension liabilities, something we have never done before." He lists among some of his...
Single Family Homes After several months of price increases month after month, single family home prices seemed to level off a little in march but they are cruising along at new highs. Only 4 homes actually closed escrow last month. This is the lowest number of closings, in Culver City proper, that I've seen in 14 years! If the low, super low inventory continues expect the price rises to extend further into 2014. Rates are stable around the 4.5% range, and most lenders I talk to do not see any...

Dear Editor, A common refrain anyone will hear coming from me is that I love living in Culver City because of the ability we have to actually speak with our community’s leaders. Over the 14 years I have lived here, there have been many occasions where I’ve felt the need to personally contact one or more of our city council members about an issue or an idea. Jeff Cooper & Jim Clarke are two council members who take the time to listen. I know that they listen, because they respond not with a rot...

Last Friday's home afternoon contest against Mira Costa High, the South Bay baseball pow...
By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor The new Dodger owners spend lavishly and they’re attempting to build a championship team. “Last year we made a lot of progress and reached the playoffs,” said Magic Johnson. “Now our goal is to go all the way.” Many forecasters have listed the Dodgers as favorites to win the World Series. One consideration is their record $240 million payroll. But there’s been enough early trouble for fans to be concerned. Let us count the difficulties – quite a few since it’s on...

Dear Editor, Did you know that PXP has now done over 150 frack jobs using a variety of differently named processes in the nearby oil field? Are you concerned about the escalating magnitude and intensity of the earthquakes we are experiencing? Wonder if these are fracking related? You or neighbors complain of heavy noxious odors in the early hours when there is a marine layer? Concerned? Want answers? Four good men are running for Council. Incumbents seeking re-election ask we wait till the...

He is also very experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to Culver City¹s...
By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist Let me be the first to tell everyone, “My eyes don’t lie.” The old sergeant doesn’t have macular degeneration or cataracts or glaucoma. Recently I saw our City Manager, Mr. John Nachbar, a person whom we all respect and admire, and told him of one department’s lack of compliance with Government Code 6250-6276.48, the Public Records Act – especially 6253(c). There can be no doubt in anyone’s mind that when soft-spoken Mr. Nachbar whispers, his voice carries...

He graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy rising from Ensign to Commander through active and reserve duty. His Master’s Degree in Public Administration rounded his leadership role. He worked at an important Director level for Mayor Villaraigosa’s Office of Grants, overseeing millions of dollars of funding. He also served as chief of staff for Congress mem...

By Lynne Bronstein Observer Reporter Every member of the Culver City Council seems to be against hydraulic fracturing and other methods of oil well stimulation. Yet at the council meeting Monday night a discussion of how to proceed in creating a ban or method of controlling the fracking process yielded no action as the council heard yet more pleas from the community to do something about the controversial process. Eighteen speakers in public comment presented arguments that have been heard many...
