Scott Malsin is not a consensus builder. When first running for City Council in 2006, Scott touted himself as a "consensus builder." Throughout that campaign and the two that have followed, Mr. Malsin has presented himself to this community as someone who can work with everyone, who can bring civility to the council, and who can improve the tone of city government. Given that objective, it amazes me to hear that Mr. Malsin and his campaign manager, Laura Stuart (herself appointed by Mr. Malsin and his colleagues to a city commission seat),...

Before you vote for Scott Malsin, think about these questions: 1. Didn’t he have health insurance [that he paid for] before he became a City Councilman? 2. How can he really be concerned about the City when he will probably cost Culver City hundreds of thousands of dollars for free lifetime medical benefits? 3. He is not losing lifetime medical benefits. He is just being asked to pay part of the cost. Why can’t/won’t he do it? 4. How much harm did he do to the City’s negotiations with the unions last year when he published three op-ed pieces...

Be Sure to Vote……. We have a very important election in a few weeks. There are very serious, complex financial issues that the new City Council will have to face and find solutions for, while trying to protect the quality of life and level of services that we have come to appreciate in Culver City. Review the candidate’s information, biographies and position statements and vote for the candidates that you believe are best-equipped to deal with these tough financial problems. Voting for only one candidate when there are four seats to fill is no...

  • Dear Editor:

    Mar 21, 2012

Whether we like it or not, we are living in “interesting times.” The economy is limping toward a recovery, but cities are still feeling a serious financial crunch. On a state and national level, politicians seem intent on being as divisive as possible and presenting choices in stark black and white. We are fortunate in Culver City. Yes, we are facing tough budget choices and difficult fiscal times. But we have a number of intelligent, dedicated individuals who are willing and able to work together to navigate these troubled waters, who are abl...

  • Students Grill Council Candidates

    Lynne Bronstein, Observer Reporter|Mar 21, 2012

They Respond About Issues, Pizza The Actors’ Gang Theatre seemed an appropriate venue for a lively City Council candidate forum on March 14 at which the questions-including some on controversial topics-were asked by Culver City high school, middle school, and elementary school students. Presented by Culver City High and moderated by two students, CC High senior Nicole Martin and home-schooled Claire Wineland, the forum alternated between questions asked of one candidate and “lightning rou...

Tanita and a sophomore from Foothill High were the only ones who’ll return next season. • Sessions Helps, But Lakers Will Miss Fisher

    Mitch Chortkoff|Mar 21, 2012

When I attended the Lakers’ game against Utah Sunday night I focused on Ramon Sessions, the team’s new point guard. Immediately, he made an impression with his speed. Session’s presence changes the personality of the 2012 Lakers from a slow-moving team to a team that wants to run. He gets the ball upcourt quickly and teammates better keep up. I don’t dispute the fact that the 25-year-old guard is an upgrade from 37-year-old Derek Fisher. But it’s possible the Lakers are going to regret cu...
