  • MOVIE REVIEW: Jack Of The Red Hearts

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Feb 25, 2016

Despite what is being touted of late, let it never be said that there isn't diversity in filmmaking. And contrary to the "forced" diversity which many film festival directors, programmers and controlling guilds and academies are of late trying to force feed to the industry and public alike, the diversity I am seeing in many films is genuine, and reflects not only a diversity of issues and topics and performers in front of the camera, but directorial craftsmanship and artistry that rings true of...

  • How. To. Lose. Weight.

    Carole Bell|Feb 25, 2016
    1

Out by sweat, bathroom, metabolism, anxiety. In, you all know about. To my surprise, a speaker at a conference once started by totally changing his topic. Instead of addressing a legal subject, he told us to watch our weight. "You're all smart, you know what to do," he told us by not telling us. He credited us with being able to figure out how to do this. Then he gave us a five-second exercise to calm down. You can do this. Sit straight, look straight ahead. Take a deep breath, to a slow count...

  • "Let's Not Lose The Sight Of What's Important"

    Bosmat Eynav|Feb 25, 2016

As an Israeli citizen we unfortunately face a loss of loved ones on a regular basis. In my last visit to my country I experienced it personally when my precious 19-year-old cousin was stabbed in his kidney and carotid artery and died a few hours later. The grief, darkness and rage that controls your mind and spirit is unspeakable. In time it doesn't heal. The wound is still open. Hearing the phenomenal mindful words of Coach Monte Williams about the unexpected loss of his wife in an automobile...

Kailey Tooke, Culver's leading scorer for the past two seasons, had her finest game as a Centaur. It wasn't that she scored an unprecedented 46 points or dominated the backboards, it was her manner and...

  • Clippers Have High Hopes For Jeff Green

    Mitch Chortkoff|Feb 25, 2016

Last week at the NBA trading deadline the Clippers acquired 6-foot-9 forward Jeff Green from Memphis. It is being viewed as a trade that will help the Clippers because they’re finally replacing Matt Barnes, who they sent away at the start of the season. I’ve written that the Clippers made a mistake in trading Barnes because he was both a reliable shooter from the corner and a tenacious defender. When opponents concentrated their defense on Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, Barnes would go to one...

  • Columnist Wants More Transparency In Local Governmernt

    Neil Rubenstein|Feb 25, 2016

There shouldn’t be a question in anyone’s mind that for all the right reasons I feel Marcus Tiggs can bring a new common sense approach to our City Council. Transparency in local government needs to make a comeback. Another breath of fresh air is Meghan Sahli-Wells, who has countless new ideas to move the city along. We need strong women who can take charge and make improvements as necessary. It has been 65 years since Earl Lloyd became the first African American to play in the National Bas...

  • USC Must Win To Reach NCAA Tournament

    Feb 25, 2016

The USC men’s basketball team has come to that NCAA fork in the road. If they win least four or five more games they will make the NCAA Tournament. If they lose four or five games their tournament dreams will probably disappear. They lost their first home game of the year last Sunday, to Utah 80-69. Utah was led by its 7-foot center Jakob Poeltl from Vienna, Austria. He dominated the Trojans in the paint. USC is now 15-1 at home. “I am proud of the team’s effort,” said USC head coach Andy Enfield after the loss to Utah. “Our effort level is...

  • The dogs have heard the Trump whistle, and now they are barking

    Karen Basson|Feb 25, 2016

Congresswoman, 37th Congressional District In 2005 The Economist introduced a new term into our political lexicon: Dog whistle politics. It is the act of “putting out a message that, like a high-pitched dog-whistle, is only fully audible to those at whom it is directly aimed.” Even before he announced his candidacy for the Presidency of the United States last year, Donald Trump was working on perfecting his dog-whistle rhetoric to call out to racists in the United States. In 2011, Donald Trump crowned himself king of the birther movement whe...

  • Culver Youngster Witnesses Obama's Local Visit

    Feb 25, 2016

On Friday the 12th, I had a very special adventure with my dad. Me and my dad went to LAX airport to see President Obama and his jet, Air Force One. We went with a group called Kid Scoop Media. We had to wait for a long time. While we waited we met two bomb-sniffing dogs, Officer Jerry and Officer Nori. We also met the President's secret service limo driver. He showed us the inside of the bullet-proof limousine. Even the window glass is bullet proof! Finally, five helicopters flew in and landed...

  • MOVIE REVIEW: KUNG FU PANDA 3

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Feb 25, 2016

The kid in me fell in love with Panda Po back in 2008 when "Kung Fu Panda" was released. Charming, funny and filled with action and antics led to pure entertainment, while introducing us to what have become beloved characters premised on a goose named Mr. Ping raising an abandoned young Panda named Po. Wonderful thematics and messaging about family and friends. When "Kung Fu Panda 2" rolled around in 2011, I watched it with my two younger nephews, with the 5-year old writing his own review of...
