  • Gnomeo & Juliet

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Feb 9, 2011

To be a gnome or not be a gnome; that is the question. And the answer, my friends? Go “gnomal” with the most “GNOMETASTIC” film of the year (and my pick for Best Animated Feature at Oscar 2012) - GNOMEO & JULIET!! If I died today, it would be with a smile on my face and a song in my heart after seeing GNOMEO & JULIET. I smiled, laughed, teared up, got goosebumps, smiled some more, laughed a lot more, tapped my toes, danced in my seat and had a grin from ear to ear the entire time...and when the...

  • Gardening with Charlie - Pruning Fruit Trees

    Charlie Nardozzi|Feb 9, 2011

While it's easy this time of year to just daydream about next year's garden, there are some chores to be done. Late winter is the perfect time for one of my favorite garden tasks: pruning fruit trees. Most gardeners are nervous about making cuts to their precious trees, and, consequently, they prune only a little, and poorly, or not at all. However, pruning isn't rocket science. You just need to follow some basic principles and get out there and start cutting. Pruning New and Old Trees When pruning young trees, the goal is to create a strong...

  • Jaffe Can Apply For Superintendent Board Votes To Amend Contract Language

    Lynne Bronstein|Feb 9, 2011

A packed Board room cheered loudly Tuesday night as the Culver City School Board voted to amend the interim superintendent agreement with Patricia Jaffe, enabling her to be considered for the permanent superintendent post. The 3-1-1 vote (Karlo Silbiger voted against the amendment and Patricia Siever abstained) came after numerous emails, phone calls, and comments by a number of speakers who gave their enthusiastic support to Jaffe. But not everyone thought the amendment was the right thing to...

  • Tito's Reopens After Crash

    Stephen Hadland|Feb 9, 2011

The ever popular Tito’s Tacos reopened Tuesday morning after a near tragic crash on Saturday afternoon. An elderly female driver, Marie Stathus, accidently put her car in reverse and hit the gas pedal. She crashed into the wall at Tito’s at such a high rate of speed she knocked a large hole in the wall and moved giant refrigerators across the floor. The refrigerators stopped the vehicle saving approximately 40 employees and over 300 customers from being injured. Repair crews along with city insp...

  • Speakers Praise Mandell, But Still No Vote

    Lynne Bronstein|Feb 9, 2011

Culver City loves its summer concert series and its citizens appreciate the work done by longtime producer Gary Mandell. But despite a show of support by speakers in public comment at the Redevelopment Agency’s Monday night meeting, the Agency did not make an absolute commitment to having him back as producer for the 2011 concert series. The Agency’s options for producing the festival included suggestions from the events subcommittee of the Cultural Affairs Commission: shortening the existing fe...

  • College Unaware Of Recent Drilling

    Feb 9, 2011

“West Los Angeles College was in no way aware of, or involved with the recent drilling of a new oil well by Plains Exploration and Production (PXP),” stated John Oester, WLAC’s Vice President of Operations. The college was told that the drilling began on January 28, 2011 on property directly adjacent to the new campus road prompting several of the college’s neighboring home owner associations to question if there was a connection between the road construction and the new well construction. The college’s new road, College Boulevard, will open...

  • UCLA's Love Returns As An All-Star

    Mitch Chortkoff|Feb 9, 2011

A highlight for me of this month’s NBA all-star game at Staples Center will be the presence of Kevin Love. The third year member of the Minnesota Timberwolves returns here after playing one year at UCLA. You see, I saw tapes of Love’s high school games in Oregon and drew upon my many years of traveling with Laker teams to determine that this was a special player. I saw he could score, rebound and pass and had the instincts to do each one at the right time. I expected a lot, and Love led the Bru...

  • Neuheisel (It's Not My Fault) Survives

    Mitch Chortkoff|Feb 9, 2011

Throughout my sportswriting career I’ve believed coaches know more about their teams than anyone in the media. That’s because they see their players and assistant coaches every day and we don’t. There are times, however, when I question something a coach has done. That’s normal for a probing journalist. And today is one of those days UCLA’s football team has been 4-8 the last two years. After three seasons Coach Rick Neuheisel has failed to turn the program around. And in recent months th...

  • Culver's Armstrong Picks Hawaii

    Dale Williams|Feb 9, 2011

Ever since he was 10 years old, watching college football games on TV, Ijumaa Armstrong wanted to play football for the University of Hawaii. Armstrong got that wish granted last week when the Culver City High safety signed a letter-of-intent to play for the Rainbow Warriors. Armstrong, one of the Centaurs’ top defensive players the past two seasons, said he’s excited about heading off to the island. “Hawaii was my first choice all along,” Armstrong said. “I grew up watching them as a little kid. I love it there. It’s an island paradise....

  • Culver Gets 19th Win Playoffs Are Coming Up

    Dale Williams|Feb 9, 2011

Culver City High boys’ basketball coach Jonathan Chapman wasn’t all that surprised with how last week went for the Centaurs. Culver City lost both of its games last week, Ocean League contests to Santa Monica and Inglewood, and Chapman had foreshadowed it all by saying as the week began that the biggest way to get his team to recognize its complacent play was if “we lose both games.” So after a 59-58 loss to Santa Monica at home and a 61-49 loss at Inglewood, Chapman was ready to meet with his t...
