Perhaps you just know a member of the family or a friend who would like to be in law enforcement. Well, tell that lucky person to gas up his/her car and drive to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office in Florence, Arizona where there are 65 vacant positions. If you or your friends or your family could not come up with the money to get a second opinion on the DNA then expect to spend a long, long, long time locked up. For example, a man is suing two months in a sexual assault case because of a DNA m...
Are developers causing trouble for Fox Hills? Could greedy developers be behind the large group of youths causing trouble at the Westfield Culver City and in Fox Hills? Are the developers secretly using social media to target youths in South Central Los Angeles, getting them to travel by bus all the way over to Fox Hills and cause mayhem? Are these developers using rowdy youths to drive down the cost of the Fox Hills Plaza and other real estate in Fox Hills by creating fear and causing owners...
When you are traveling between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida take a small detour and visit the Mildred Huie Plantation and Museum for an appointment and personal tour, (912) 638-8425. You will be amazed at the art collection and St. Simon’s Island. I am activating a contest Theo and I had several years ago. Perhaps you remember our “Where is Herman Cain These Days?” contest. The person to get to the newspaper office (4346 Sepulveda) with the correct answer could win a 2017 De So...
Although some just might think the election ended in November (and for many it did), for others the preparation for the next Culver City council race just began. We know the reason the conservative Republican group seems to elect their number is because they start early building a resume of achievements and organizations. Unfortunately, the progressive Democrats seem to wait until the last minute and no doubt they will feel their huge plurality makes the election a snap for Demos. Let’s get s...
In Georgia’s De Kalb County Hillary Clinton received more than 78 percent of the votes cast for president in 2016. I hope Councilmember Jim Clarke’s ears are on, because for all you Coastguardsmen you have two reunions coming up, the first being April 25 through April 28 in Cape May, New Jersey. Everyone is welcome, especially, those who served on the Bibb. Contact Lloyd Hensley at (865) 384-6254. There is also al Coast Guard Reunion in Minneapolis on June 10. Call Chris at (952) 935-9065. I don’t believe it, but 83-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg can normally bench-press 70 pounds, per her personal trainer. 2016 was a bad year for the people of New Jersey. No longer do they have low-priced gasoline. That’s right. Governor Chris Christie signed legislation that raised gas tax from 14.5 cents to 37.5 cents a gallon. Overnight, gas tax went from the second lowest to the seventh highest state. Louisiana, in April 2016, raised the sales tax to 9.99 percent; the high...
The last bastion of segregation in Los Angeles County . . . Some time ago in the late ‘ 60s, a young white couple moved into the lowlands (the non-Fox Hills area) of Culver City, and they were told by the real estate agent, “Don’ t worry, those Negroes won’ t be moving down here from Fox Hills. We are keeping them in their place.” This statement was made before the current laws prohibiting such statements from real estate agents. Who could have ever dreamed that the once predominantly black are...
The last time any of us were at Culver City city hall we noticed the number of empty desks. Perhaps a better usage of space would be to consolidate city functions on two floors and the school district on the third level. This thought would free up the current Culver City School District headquarters to be sold, leased or rented. Effective January 1 Southern California Edison has increased its fees. Can it be true the only thing that goes up faster than the SCE charges is a rocket to outer...
Under the Republicans the Congressional Budget Office figures a 64-year-old making $26,500 per year would see health care premiums increase, bythe year 2026, by 750 percent. Under current law they pay $1,700 but, perCBO projections, under the new bill this group would have to pay almost $14,600, which is more than half their yearly income. The Beverly Hills Police Department will begin the expansion of their closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance and automated license plate recognition...
Before President Obama left office he signed the 21st Century Cures Act to study Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and spur new disease treatments. The measure would provide nearly $4.8 billion over the next 10 years to the National Institutes of Health for cutting-edge research. Finally the tide is starting to turn. In Forsyth County, Georgia the Cumming City Council changed a retirement benefit rule. Council members upped the length of time a city employee has to work to qualify for retirement h...
As reported by Reuters on February 7, Bank of America opens branches without employees. That’s right, the bank opened three completely automated branches during the month of January where customers can use ATMs and have video conferences with employees at other branches. What a money saver!!! How many loans to employees will be granted if no one has a job? A laid off Bank of America employee is a poor credit risk. An example here in California of drivers getting gouged could be a $100 traffic t...
Would you believe? Would anyone believe? Awhile back a Georgia lawmaker, Gerald Greene (R-Cuthbert), was shot in the leg behind an adult entertainment store. Furthermore, Greene had several thousand dollars in donations for storm relief efforts in his pocket that the shooter didn’t get. Greene’s story claims he parked his vehicle and planned to walk to a nearby liquor store to buy lottery tickets. After being wounded Greene walked to the liquor store where the police found him. Greene des...
Has Mayor Jim Clarke mentioned our city of approximately 40,000 is in the red by over $360 million? Perhaps Jeff Cooper, soon to be mayor, will get a loan from his employer, Wells Fargo Bank, to cover any bounced city checks. If you need another example of pension abuse, just look to Jacksonville, Florida. America’s oldest city is in the hole $2.85 billion for its pension debt (December 21, 2016, the Times-Union, page 31). Rumor is strong that our city needs to dump its garbage collection servic...
Am I gullible? Am I naïve? But why, I ask, do people believe they can mess up the system and not get caught? VW, Takata air-bags and Wells Fargo Bank are just a few examples of the leaders who went over the edge. Many believe the Department of Justice should not only fine the companies but put their leaders in cell block C. Do you remember Sears and Roebuck on Manchester and Hillcrest in Inglewood? It was so popular they had a lady on the roof with a mic directing drivers to parking stalls. We...
The United States Mint will release a commemorative gold coin in April that will feature Lady Liberty as a black woman. marking the first time the U.S. symbol has been depicted as anything other than white on the nation’s currency. The coin, with a $100 face value, will commemorate the 225th anniversary of the Mint’s coin production, the Mint and the Treasury Department announced in mid-January. Going on sale on April 6, 2017, it will be 24-karat and weigh about an ounce. If you haven’t signe...
By Neil Rubenstein Observer Columnist On the page labeled “whatever happened to” I see the name Kim Davis. Yes, I know you remember Kim, a Kentucky county clerk and a longtime Democrat who switched to be a Republican because she felt abandoned by the Democrats in her fight against same-sex marriage. She was honored at the Values Voter Summit by the Family Research Council. The Los Angeles County Supervisors recently passed an ordinance in the unincorporated areas to spay or neuter and mic...
The power grabbers at Culver City city hall are laughing so hard their stomachs are hurting. I guess for years they thought we were so naive that we just got off the turnip truck. Well, our day is coming!!! Perhaps you remember the Council ran all over town to get us to vote for the increase in the sales tax, we are so trusting. I and others tried to tell everyone the increase would go to the big shots’ wages and pensions. The chart shown below was a public document request that shows money s...
Women who have had false-positive results on mammograms may face a greater risk of future breast cancer according to a new study. The findings were published recently in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, which is a journal of the American Association of Cancer Research. The study analyzed 2.2 million mammograms from 1.3 million U.S. women who ranged in age from 40 to 74. The study found women with a false positive result had a 39 percent greater chance of developing breast cancer...
Recently I had some spare time so I looked through my filing cabinet containing some issues of the Culver City News as well as the Culver City Observer from 2006. From March 2, 2006, Scott Malsin was running for City Council with the election on April 11, 2006. Also, on Page 1 Jeff Cooper and his supporters were marching to keep the city from uprooting 13.000 square feet of grass for the skateboard park that was scheduled to be built later that year. Furthermore, on Page 1 City Parks...
As reported in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners (Board of Supervisors as it’s called in California) voted 5-0 to spend $13.4 million for the new countywide 800 MHz data radio communications system. This replacement network will be tied to new 800 MHz radios being purchased by each of the six Cobb cities for 911 center communications. Funding will come from the 2016 Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax Funds. Could this be the reason or part of the r...
The County of Los Angeles is planning a tax to fund drought planning, which will be introduced in an election after November 2016. When we get to Baltimore, Maryland we plan to see the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum. Now that we have a new superintendent of schools, I would like to suggest year round classes, easing away from Japanese and pushing Chinese. What’s happening with the Takata air bag recall? Six months ago the Los Angeles Times mentioned eight automakers were recalling more t...
Is the rumored closing of the Culver City Sanitation Department true? Is billionaire medical doctor Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, buying the Culver City Sanitation Station and causing the sanitation employees of Culver City to lose their jobs? We don't know. Rumor is that Dr. Soon-Shiong has expressed distaste for the smell and general appearance of the sanitation facility. In addition, it is rumored that he wants to purchase the sanitation land for millions and turn it into retail shopping and...
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says one vehicle in eight still needs to be checked for defective Takata air bags. NHTSA recommends owners check for recall information, and if their vehicle is part of the recall, contact a local dealer for a free repair. Just in case you haven’t heard, the City of Chicago is in deep trouble with their employee pension costs. Chicago will pay about $1 billion next year into four separate pension funds. To cover that in part, their c...
This election on November 8 will be so long, what with federal offices, judges, propositions, bonds and taxes, and the “facts” mailed by the pro and anti camps, you just have to wonder how many mail carriers will get hernias and go on state disability. Over the past few months I have made Theodorsia’s and my recommendations regarding judges and the city hall power grab of placing the police and fire chiefs under the city manager. To the people at city hall who want to grab power in that manne...
So what happened to the $20 bill? Just how long does it take to remove President Jackson and put in Harriet Tubman? I believe the Central Valley’s bullet train just shot its backers in their feet. It’s amazing the Board of Supervisors is considering a parcel tax to help the homeless. Culver City already has a parcel tax for the Julian Dixon County Library and I’m darn sure there are one or two more that I just don’t remember. Saint Vincent operates the world’s largest thrift store. It’s 54,0...
