  • Dear Fox Hills Neighbor

    Letters|May 7, 2015

Your Fox Hills Neighborhood Association is taking a stand against the proposed billboards in Fox Hills. The Carlyle Group wants to put up large digital and static billboards by the 405 and 90 freeway to benefit from the Silicon Beach traffic in that area. Culver City will gain a 10% profit from this ($420,000/year). Is this worth what could potentially harm our local community? Please read Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells article at http://meghansahliwells.com/ morebillboards/ to learn more about this...

    Letters|Mar 19, 2015

Dear editor, Back in January 2015, the school board voted to go along with Superintendent LaRose’s mid-year recommendation to raise district salaries another two percent- across-the-board. This latest raise brings the employees’ accumulative salary gains to over 15% since Mr. LaRose was hired—back in 2011. This two-percent, district-wide increase was not peanuts. It increased the district’s total cost for employing its current staff by over a million dollars annually. At the school board’s...

Dear Editor, Thank you for the wonderful article on our upcoming Feb. 28, 2015, concert. It means much to the orchestra. Regards. Matthew Hetz, Executive Director/President Culver City Symphony Orchestra...

    Letters|Jan 29, 2015

I’m responding to your coverage of events that occurred at Culver City High School in December 2013, and were reported to school officials and police in January 2014. Your report seems to be based on allegations made in a recent lawsuit brought against the Culver City Unified School District on behalf of a female former student. At a meeting on Friday, January 22 with CCUSD leadership, Lt. Jason Simms of the Culver City Police Department (CCPD) said that three sexual assaults occurred on c...

    Letters|Jan 15, 2015

Since Sony is still in Culver City you do have the obligation to feature them, but you write about a tenth-rate clown picture, and follow the standard news blogs about the North Korean responsibility, which may well be true, but lacks proof, other than that the FBI said so to President Obama. I certainly am not qualified to know, nor are you, nor is the president and possibly not the FBI either, but that promoted the picture and made lots of money for someone (s). No, of course I do not...

Another person named Michael Landis (with no middle initial or no middle name) received a Red Light Ticket At Beethoven and Washington Blvd., I was informed by my automobile insurance company and LexusNexis Consumer Center that I had received a moving violation posted on my DMV record and that my auto insurance would be increased because of this violation. My Drivers license number, date of birth and home address became linked with the other Michael Landis as well as his automobile, home...

I am writing to the Culver City Observer to urge the writing staff to reconsider using the terminology "Illegal Aliens" when reporting about issues related to immigration. Language is a powerful tool, as you all journalists know. The language used in this article may be offensive for immigrants and undocumented people in Culver City. From the recent census, Culver City's population of foreign born people is roughly 24% and the Latino or Hispanic population is 23.2%, and the city of Los Angeles...

    Letters|Nov 6, 2014

Last week I finally received a copy of your new contract with Redflex. It was signed on Aug. 29, more than three months after the May 12 council meeting where you approved the continuation of the program. The signed contract shows that you didn't get the price down, even though the long delay suggests there might have been some kind of a negotiation going on. I am writing today to point out that it's not too late to get a better price and save nearly a million Dollars. Section 6.2 of the...

In the commentary article by Mr. Chris Faulkner, “Fracking will improve, not hurt public health” (Oct. 16-22) Mr. Faulkner asserts that fracking is “a drilling technique that actually lessened the harmful health impacts of the energy industry by reducing our reliance on coal.” Fracking, Mr. Faulkner says, has given us renewed access to natural gas which emits less carbon pollutants than coal does. This assertion, by the CEO Breitling Energy Corporation, is misleading and leads to a false c...

Dear Editor, Vote for Murray for West Basin Municipal Water District. I received a phony campaign slate mailer titled “SAVE PROPOSITION 13 NEWSLETTER” with Scott Houston’s name and photo in it. It’s not a newsletter at all, but a deceptive campaign slate mailer that has nothing to do with Proposition 13. This is ironic. The current newsletter of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, founded by Proposition 13 sponsor Howard Jarvis, honors Mike Robbins as a “Hometown Hero” for leading the...

    Letters|Oct 30, 2014

Vote against Scott Houston for West Basin Municipal Water District Board if you don’t want additional unnecessary water rate hikes. All three candidates are “progressive” (ultra-liberal) Democrats, and two-time City Council loser Houston is the absolute worst of the three. Vote for Stephen Murray instead. Houston supported Measure P, the firefighter union’s initiative (4/10/12), which was defeated by 90 percent of El Segundo voters. It would have disbanded our local Fire Department and transfe...

    Letters|Oct 9, 2014

Recently residents in the community of Raintree were victims of burglaries. I would like to thank and commend Chief Scott Bixby and the Culver City Police Department for their immediate response and excellent work in dealing with these burglaries and ensuring the safety of our residents and their homes. Residents with dogs have an added measure of security against burglars. However, for residents without dogs, there are relatively inexpensive alternatives in the form of barking,/growling dog...

    Letters|Oct 9, 2014

The Culver City Unified School District has on its Agenda for Tuesday, October 14, 2014, a Resolution in Support of a Spilt Roll Property Tax in the State of California. A Split Roll Property Tax would impose a significant increase in business operation cost for all businesses in the state. The Culver City Chamber has an Advocacy Policy in opposition to any attempt to impose a Split Roll Property Tax. There are many reasons for this opposition: • Undue cost to small business • Most Com...

Re: The Culver City Red Light Camera Contract - Has It Been Signed Yet? Save $$$ Honorable Mayor and Councilmembers: I wrote you the attached letter a few days before the May 12 meeting during which you voted to continue the City's red light camera program and re-elect Redflex as the vendor. Then after the meeting I sent City Manager Nachbar the May 19 letter included in the thread below. Early last month I used the Public Records Act to obtain some City documents, and those showed that as of...

I love the ninja turtle movies but I also love turtles. Real turtles are not ninjas, not appropriate pets for youngsters, and not legal to sell if their shells are less than 4 inches in diameter. Real turtles also carry salmonella which transmits to children and adults when hands are put in mouths, eyes etc. without serious washing in between. Salmonella can be fatal to the young, elderly and vulnerable. Turtles also don't provide the type of sustained interaction that children like which often...

    Letters|May 29, 2014

I am writing in support of Measure CC. I am the mother of two children in Culver City schools, Linwood E. Howe Elementary and Culver City Middle School. A quality education is one of the building blocks of not just a good society, but a great one. CCUSD has done a brilliant job of weathering the budget storms of the past decade; they have prioritized teacher salaries and quality programs over facilities upgrades. Now, however, there are upgrades needed to our facilities that are becoming dire....

    Letters|May 29, 2014

While I usually vote against anything that increases my taxes, I'm voting FOR Measure CC. It's a NECESSARY bond measure to ensure our Culver City schools don't fall into disrepair. I've witnessed firsthand dangerous electrical issues, asbestos issues, seismic problems, rain falling into classrooms, puddles that don't go away, rusty water coming out of drinking fountains, ceiling tiles falling down during class, a library with rain damage to paneling from 5 years ago that has not been repaired at...

    Letters|May 29, 2014

The Board of Trustees of the Culver City Education Foundation strongly supports Measure CC. This bond measure for school facilities will have a great impact on CCUSD students, the school district and community. Our purpose is to "support and enhance quality educational programs for every student." Passage of Measure CC will provide $106 million for making necessary repairs and upgrades to CCUSD school facilities which will improve the educational environment. Endorsing Measure CC is consistent...

    Letters|May 29, 2014

On June 3, 2014 we all have the opportunity to make a positive difference in Culver City by voting Yes on Measure CC, the school facilities bond measure that will be on the June 3rd ballot. Culver City will celebrate its Centennial Birthday in 2017. From the beginning our schools have been excellent and a selling point for potential new residents. Our schools are a major reason we are a well-known, enviable city. However, today we are competing against new communities such as Agoura, Valencia,...

  • To the Editor

    Letters|May 29, 2014

Please join me and thousands of parents and vote Yes on Measure CC, the CCUSD school bond measure on the June 3rd ballot. All seven school PTA groups have endorsed Measure CC because the PTA is the nation’s oldest and largest child advocacy organization and they fully understand that the conditions of our classrooms and schools are sub par compared to schools in districts like Santa Monica-Malibu and Inglewood. Every school will be impacted by this bond. Most of our schools were built 50 y...

  • Dear Editor

    Letters|May 29, 2014

I am voting Yes on Measure CC, the Culver City School bond measure on the June 3rd ballot, because our District classrooms and facilities are outdated and in desperate need of repair. Most of our schools were built 50-70 years ago. Our students deserve modern classrooms that provide tools they need to compete and to prepare for a four-year university or other career pathways. As a member of our business community, I understand the investment we are making to modernize and upgrade our schools...

    Letters|May 29, 2014

When we moved to Culver City 20 years ago we did not have kids, but we chose Culver City in part because of the school system. Please vote YES on Measure CC, the CCUSD school bond measure on the June 3rd ballot. Over the last 10 years that our son has been a Culver City student we have spent a lot of time at the school sites. The conditions of our classrooms, science labs, computer infrastructure, plumbing, electrical, buildings, athletic areas and schools are deteriorating and need fixing up. I...

  • Rescue Warms Heart of Mom's Daughter

    Letters|May 8, 2014

Hello, Enclosed, please find my mother’s account of her “rescue” by Selena Andrade. Selena is a middle school age girl from my mom’s Braddock Drive neighborhood. My mother, who is almost 89 years old, had been in her garden smelling the roses when she tripped and fell and broke her hip. When Selena walked by and noticed my mother lying on the ground, half-hidden by shrubbery and unable to move, she used her cell phone to call for help. It was late in the day and if Selena hadn’t responded...

    Letters|Apr 24, 2014

Dear Observer, We have seen your article by Lynne Bronstein about the recent Foreign Relations of the United States volume (“Documents Reveal Howard Hughes' Role in CIA Sub Retrieval”) and would just like to point out that readers need not wait for the book version to be published to read its contents. The volume is also available on-line, for free, right now, in PDF form at: http://static.history.state.gov/frus/frus1969-76v35/pdf/frus1969-76v35.pdf. In due course the Office of the His...
