On April 12, with complete confidence and high hopes, I will be casting one of my three Culver City City Council votes for Thomas Small. My confidence stems from my long-standing and deep friendship with his family. My high hopes arise from my distinct impression that he is an expert in disciplines that matter immensely to our fair city at this important juncture. Thomas, the only non-incumbent candidate who parents children in the CCUSD, has demonstrated his commitment to our schools as both a...
From my perspective, Meghan Sahli-Wells has been an outstanding city council member and should be re-elected on April 12. A good leader, listener, and learner, Meghan is well-positioned to help Culver City evolve into an even better community for everyone. And I resonate with her both her accomplishments and specific goals in four key areas: A Healthy & Safe Community, Excellent City Services, Thriving Economy, and Sustainable City. Before we endorse a candidate we invite the candidate to meet with us to discuss what we believe are the major concerns facing our City. In addition we rely on forums to weigh the candidate’s answers and vision relative to others. We met with Thomas twice for about three hours. After having a productive chat with him we concluded that he is open-minded, very intelligent, friendly and demonstrates a willingness to learn about the City. Thomas is a very good listener, accepting other people’s opi...
At 1:30 am on Tuesday morning, while you were probably sleeping, the City Council (Meghan Sahli-Wells dissenting) changed the residential parking law that it enacted in November 2013. Under the old parking law only residents of a parking district and the City Engineer could initiate and decide modifications to restrictions in an established parking district. Now, a non-resident of a parking district can petition directly to the City Council to change parking restrictions. For instance, Joxer...
I first met Marcus Tiggs at the Forum in Tellefson Park giving all the candidates for City Council a chance to air their views. I was impressed by his intelligence, his record of service to Culver City, his outstanding military record and his balanced viewpoint. I believe that Marcus Tiggs should be one of our new City Council members. Here are more reasons why: His financial carefulness: Ours is a cyclical economy with bad times following good. It’s always been that way with no obvious c...
I am supporting Göran Eriksson for City Council. While I appreciate his positions on issues that are important to Culver City, such as environmental issues, business attraction and retention, public safety and all the other aspects that make Culver City such a great city to live in, I am supporting him for more basic, personal reasons. I admire his diligence, his work ethic, his intelligence and his leadership abilities. One example occurred when we were discussing the FAA and airplane noise...
As a Culver City resident long active in the environmental, cultural and other arenas I enthusiastically endorse Thomas Aujero Small for City Council. To focus on the environment, I am particularly impressed with his strong experience, skills, interests and endorsements. Ironically Culver City's success in becoming an increasingly diverse, creative, and attractive community has brought with it many challenges in the areas of real estate, development, and environmental and community impact. From...
I am very impressed that the Sierra Club has endorsed Councilwoman Meghan Sahli-Wells, Thomas Small and Daniel Lee for City Council. From what I understand, the Sierra Club used a very thorough process and determined that these candidates are by far the best in terms of their environmental records and their understanding of the steps our city could and should take to meet our residents' needs for health and safety. What could be more important than ours residents', workers' and visitors' health...
I am writing in response to the City Engineer's proposed removal of two (among several) Culver City pedestrian crosswalks to be voted on by the City Council this Monday Jan 24 at 7pm all as more fully detailed in the attached flyer. I am a resident and owner of a condo at Tara Hill, the 430 unit condominium complex located at Indian Wood Road, just a few hundred yards away from two of the referenced crosswalks. I am also a founding member of the Tara Hill Going Green Group, a community group...
For many years, my neighbors and I questioned the city on building a second floor in our garage. The city made it quite impossible for us to do any extra around our residences. Suddenly a duplex is sold to a local real estate company. Consequently we see things that were made impossible to us, but as miracle happens we see a massive duplex in r2 zone being built. The driveway for the second home is so narrow. I can guarantee you that parking which is already impossible will get even worse .I...
Hi Steve, How appropriate that your editorial regarding the demise of a valuable recreational resource, the Culver City Ice Arena, coincided with John Hartmire's loving tribute to Syd Kronenthal, the father of recreation in Culver City. Kronenthal said "Our city has lost two golf courses, horseback riding trails, go kart and auto racing tracks, a rollerdrome, numerous play fields and in general has wasted opportunities to save much needed open space. Once somebody takes away a recreational...
I must say I was shocked to see you state in your article on the election that the voter turnout is "difficult to calculate". There were 5914 ballots cast. There were 9154 votes, which means that 2674 people "bullet voted" for only one candidate. All of this information is published on the county's website at lavote.net. Just look under "statement of votes cast". They even put it in Excel format for you, if you so choose. Steve Levin Culver City Editors Note: Steve Levin is correct. The voter...
Throughout this school board campaign one of the primary questions about Kelly Kent is Who is she? and What is her experience working with our Culver City schools? These are questions I am uniquely positioned to answer, and I believe that my perspective may be of benefit to the electorate, who are being asked to select candidates in our upcoming local election. For well over a year I have worked with Kelly day in and day out to jointly create the new Spanish language program at Lin Howe. From a...
My absentee ballot was mailed today with a vote for Dr. Kelly Kent. It is rare that we have someone with her qualifications on our school board. An educator, Dr. Kent understands the learning process and will put in the time and energy to provide our students with what they need to excel both as students and as citizens. Based on her research and classroom expertise, she knows how children learn. With her children attending Linwood Howe, where there was no foreign language program, Kelly...
Hi All, As some of you are aware, a Planning Commission meeting took place yesterday. Unfortunately, more than ever, the Commission demonstrated they are simply not equipped to tackle the mansionization issue. They backpedaled and bickered among themselves over several vital points they had previously agreed upon -- and for the first time, a lobbyist from the "Building Industry Association of Southern California" openly tried scare tactics and propaganda to sway opinions during public comments....
Dear Editor, I’m writing to share my enthusiastic support for Kelly Kent for Culver City School Board. We are fortunate to have a candidate that has showed the love and commitment to the education of Lin Howe students and our community. I am both a parent and a Spanish teacher at Lin Howe; I am part of the Spanish enrichment program that Kelly co-founded with Joanna Brody and other parents. This Spanish Language Program has been a success since day one. The thought that perhaps Lin Howe would n...
Dear Mr. Publisher, I read with interest your comments on the 4545 Sepulveda Blvd. project, known by many as the former ice rink. First, let me say that I'm writing to you as a 68-year resident of Culver City and a former two term member of the Culver City Council and not representing my employer. Back in 1961 the Culver City Planning Commission allowed the original proposed owners of the ice rink building to use the rear portion of the lot as parking in a R-1 Zone (residential) for the length o...
Why I am Compelled to Vote for Dr. Kelly Kent. Dr. Kelly Kent exudes intelligence, ingenuity and integrity. She is an incredibly positive force of nature brimming with creative ideas and love for our community. One can’t help but adore and be in awe of this woman. Hands-on mom of two, Dr. Kelly holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience, is founder and director of a reputable educational firm, lecturer at two local colleges, and as if that is not already enough, she is also a city commissioner and dedicated...
It is refreshing to learn that we in Culver City are blessed to have Dr. Kelly Kent, an Educational Neuroscientist, willing to serve as a School Board member. As a seasoned educator and psychotherapist for the past 30 years, I've witnessed the benefits my clients enjoy from applied neuroscience. We can too! How? Last year we voted to spend over $200 million (Bond + interest) to improve our schools. With Dr. Kent on board we will be able to maximize the benefits of this investment with the...
Dear Editor, Anne Burke and Scott McVarish will make excellent additions to the School Board. Our current board is hip deep handling the allocation of school bond funds, Anne and Scott are ready to jump in and join them. Through their involvement with the facilities assessments, bond workshops, and attendance at School Board meetings, Anne and Scott have really done their homework and understand the intricacies of the bond and the construction challenges ahead. As a member of the Citizens Bond...
Dear Editor, Cecil, a beloved lion, known by all for his black mane was lured out of his protected habitat in a Zimbabwean national park by a Minnesota dentist, Walter Palmer, and his guides, and killed. Not just killed – but shot with a bow and arrow and left in pain for 40 hours until put out of his misery via gunshot. The fact that Cecil was used to tourists and trusted them to some extent, relegates this heinous act to that akin to those characteristic of a canned hunt, which is not even c...
Neil Rubenstein, I am happy to see your interest in the city’s finances. Without its finances in order, a city quickly deteriorates and is forced to limit the services it provides to its businesses and residents. I am not sure what report you refer to that lists Culver City as being among the lower 15% in financial health among cities in California; however, as chair of the city’s Finance Advisory Committee, I can say confidently that that is not correct and that the city currently has a hea...
I am writing this note to thank Officer Corolla Fleeger for her amazing work. With her incredible dedication and initiative, this week she reunited an elderly, injured dog with its family. She is Culver City’s Animal Service Officer, and I wanted to share this story and also to let our Culver City residents know that we have this wonderful resource. Yesterday morning, my son Sam spotted a confused looking dog wandering in our neighborhood. The dog looked hungry and injured. I tried to a...
I found a number of errors in reporting of agenda item A-1 (Moratorium on Large Homes). 1. There was no vote on a moratorium, there was discussion and it appeared that it would lose on a 3-2 vote. Council member Sahli-Wells made a motion on mansionization, it failed to get a second. 2. Your reporter identified myself as the president of the Culver City Chamber, I'am, I made it clear that I was speaking as an individual, I just believe that that comment takes away from my individual right of...
Thank you everyone for your support whether that was contacting council, signing the petition or getting the word out. Our voices were heard at last night's City Council Meeting. They are still considering options on how to improve Fox Hills but billboards are no longer on the table. The importance of getting the surrounding residents input was brought up several times. We will keep you informed as soon as we know something. Again thank you for your support and help. Fox Hills Neighborhood...
