The 2017-2018 NHL season is set to begin. Can the Pittsburgh Penguins win a third straight Stanley Cup? Can the Los Angeles Kings actually secure a playoff spot? Will the San Jose Sharks be deep enough to get a Stanley Cup for Joe Thornton, set to play in his 20th NHL season and returning after major knee surgery? Can the Anaheim Ducks put a significant season together if they start with so many injured players? And can The Las Vegas Golden Knights be a contender in their first National Hockey...
What does it takes to be a good coach in the NHL? Better yet, what does it take to be a great NHL coach? Is it the most wins? Is it the most Stanley Cups won? Or is it a popularity contest among the players? Who will push them harder, keep them playing past the point of exhaustion, and make them want to play through the pain of broken bones and stitches still healing? After regular season games have been played and the playoff positions are set coaches are left to motivate their players through...
In all fairness, I should begin by admitting that one of the reasons I’ve been a hockey fan for so many years is because it’s a serious contact sport and it moves fast, waiting for no one. However, one of the most frightening sights is seeing a player checked from behind, sending the player head first into the boards hard enough to snap their head back. Generally this kind of hit drops the player to the ice, unconscious or significantly dazed. One of the issues I have with the current NHL Com...
Twenty-eight years ago the Edmonton Oilers rocked the sports world when they traded Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings for $15 million. The trade also included two or three additional players, and draft picks, but for the cash-strapped Oilers it was strictly a business deal. Every year NHL coaches spend countless hours in offices and on their cell phones, speaking with scores of players, including draft picks and unrestricted free agents who are free to negotiate and sign contracts with any...
There are kids throughout North America and Europe who grow up living and breathing hockey. These young people grow up idolizing the great players who preceded them. Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Marcel Dionne, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Paul Coffey, Steve Yzerman and the list goes on. These larger-than-life figures offer inspiration and guidance to new players, and hopefully a path that leads to a Stanley Cup. The annual NHL draft convenes within two weeks of the final Stanley Cup playoff game....

I love hockey. Whether it's played on ice or cement with sharp blades of steel or roller blades. As long as there is a puck and a net I'll watch it and cheer for whichever team I believe is working the hardest. When all of the cheering is over, though, I want a clear winner. Last Saturday, at the end of what I would generally consider a well-played game, the Kings found themselves in a 3-3 tie with Vancouver. Now Vancouver is clearly a very good team...after all, they have The Sedins , always a...
