  • LA Football Club Pulls a Draw Against Chicago

    Fred Altieri, Sports Reporter|May 9, 2019

The rest of Major League Soccer is finally starting to counter LAFC's high-scoring offense with almost a third of the 2019 season already completed. Los Angeles Football Club still has the best record in league with 24 points despite an unexpected 0-0 draw at home with Chicago Fire SC last Saturday night. A match at Columbus Crew SC this weekend could restore their mojo. The Crew began the season near the top of the Eastern Conference standings with four wins, one tie and only one loss in their...

There was plenty of gold awaiting Culver City High track and field. But the big surprise of the 2019 Ocean League Finals was the Centaur varsity girls upset loss to El Segundo High by a single point, 144-143. Yet not to be denied, the Culver City boys varsity and girls frosh/soph teams defended their respective league titles. The Culver varsity girls dominated in the sprints, hurdles and relays but failed to win the League Championship for the first time in five years. El Segundo excelled in...

  • Rams Fill Out Roster in NFL Draft

    Fred Altieri, Sports Reporter|May 2, 2019

The Los Angeles Rams spent three days of the 2019 NFL Draft trading away their first-round pick, swapping draft choices and adding selections. Safety Taylor Rapp became the Rams top choice at No. 29 in the Second Round and 61st overall. Eventually the Super Bowl finalists settled on three third-rounders, one fourth, one fifth and two seventh picks. We didn't feel like we would get him, but through it all we're always like, 'Wow, Taylor Rapp,' because of his rare instincts, short area...

  • Clippers Hope to Steal one More Game Against Warriors

    Steve Finley, Sports Reporter|Apr 25, 2019

At press time the Clippers were headed to Oakland to play game five of their best of seven playoff series against the powerful Golden State Warriors. The defending NBA champions took the Clippers best shot in game four at Staples Center last Sunday and turned it into a 113-105 victory. Game five was played last Wednesday and even if the Clippers upset the Warriors in Oakland winning the series is highly unlikely. Give the Clippers credit for making it this far. They were picked to win 30-35...

    Steve Finley|Apr 11, 2019

When people talk about UCLA sports the first thing that comes to mind is their men's basketball team and the second thing in the conversation is football. The men's baseball team is No. 1 with a record of 23-6. The women's beach volleyball team is 26-1 and ranked No. 1 and the women's gymnastics team...

LAFC reaffirmed its flying start in the 2019 MLS season with a very credible 4-0 shutout over D.C. United last Saturday afternoon at Audi Field. Even with an unsatisfying second half, first place Black and Gold registered its second consecutive shutout on the road as well as another hat-trick, this time by forward Diego Rossi. "It's great to win 4-0 away from home," said head coach Bob Bradley. "We scored some really good goals. Today is a choppy game. So it's not exactly a game where there's...

  • Lakers Are Losing but Fans Stay Loyal

    Steve Finley, Sports Reporter|Mar 28, 2019

The Los Angeles Lakers were officially eliminated last Friday from the playoffs. They have been on a downhill spiral for the last few weeks. Two of their starters, Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball are still injured and the team is still looking for the light at the end of the free agent tunnel. That's the bad news. The good news is this is still the Lakers town. Fans still pack the Staples Center regardless of whom the Lakers are playing or who the Lakers put on the court. "The fans are awesome,"...

  • Los Angeles Football Club Lead Western Conference

    Fred Altieri, Sports Reporter|Mar 28, 2019

Last year, LAFC enjoyed success in their inaugural season at Banc of California Stadium. During the regular MLS season they won nine of 17 home matches and lost only once. Yet the seven draws at home, many due to failing to protect the lead, was a precursor to their unexpected 3-2 opening loss to Real Salt Lake in the playoffs. That has all changed in 2019 through four games. The success is still there with LAFC winning all three home games and leading the Western Conference with 10 points....

UCLA is the No. 1 team in the nation and they come into the weekend games with a record of 29-1. This season the Bruins appear to have no weaknesses. Their pitching is outstanding, their hitting is excellent and their defense is very good. The knock on the Bruins the last few years is that have they had only one solid reliable...
