  • LA Super Bowl Delayed One Year Due To Rain

    Mitch Chortkoff|Jun 1, 2017

What an upset. After being awarded the 2021 Super Bowl, LA has been moved back a year due to complications of our recent storm. Last week the 2021 game was awarded to Tampa and the LA Super Bowl game in the new Rams stadium in Inglewood was changed to 2022. With the delay the Rams will play their regular season home games in the Coliseum for the third straight season and the Chargers will get an extra year in the Stub Hub stadium in Carson. There’s an NFL rule that a new stadium must be o...

  • UCLA Loses Others But These Two Are Staying

    Mitch Chortkoff|Jun 1, 2017

UCLA stars Lonzo Ball and T.J. Leaf have decided to leave college to go into the NBA. And both are likely to be drafted quickly next month. Ike Anigbogu, a reserve center, is leaving too and is expected to be drafted in the middle of the first round. But the Bruins haven’t lost all the players who had announced they were departing. Junior center Thomas Welsh and sophomore guard Aaron Holiday withdrew their names from the NBA list last week. UCLA, which reached the Sweet 16 round in the NCAA T...

  • The Season Ends: Culver Baseball Coach Praises His Players

    Fred Altieri|Jun 1, 2017

The Culver City High 2017 varsity baseball season finally came to an end roughly 170 miles up the scenic Pacific Coast Highway on Thursday, May 18, in Santa Maria, located in northwest Santa Barbara County. The Centaurs lost 2-1 to the highly ranked Righetti High Warriors in a CIF Division 3 Playoff game. Culver rallied for one run in the seventh inning but came up short against Warrior ace Matt Sauer. Righetti scored both of its runs in the second inning off of Centaur starter Eli Saucedo who...

  • It's Lakers vs. Celtics Again; This Time in Rebuilding

    Mitch Chortkoff|May 18, 2017

Draft Success Excites Lakers But Celtics Are Way Ahead Of Them By Mitch Chortkoff Sports Editor Several years ago the Lakers and Celtics were terrible. Those championship battles in their history were only memories. But Boston. driven by Danny Ainge, started doing things right. They selected well and piled up top level draft choices in trades. By contrast, the Lakers floundered with Jim Buss as the top basketball executive and Mitch Kupchak as general manager. The club stood still, changing one...

  • Clippers Purchase Development League Team

    Mitch Chortkoff|May 18, 2017

As Clipper fans wonder what the team will do following its disappointing finish in the recently completed season the team took a step forward this week. The Clippers purchest a development league team named the Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario. The team will have 24 home games next season at the Citizens Bank Arena. Coach Doc Rivers is happy that the Clippers will have a minor league team close to home, joining 25 other NBA teams in that position. A local example is the Lakers had players...

  • Culver Wins Playoff Game In 11 Innings

    Fred Altieri|May 18, 2017

It was encore performance for the team, the seniors and the school. With a burst of unbridled energy the entire Culver City High baseball team raced from the dugout and engulfed teammate Jason Zeidman in a mass celebration just beyond first base and into right field. The Centaurs had just defeated visiting Oxnard High 3-2 in the 11th inning in the 2017 CIF Playoff play-in game on Tuesday, May 16. For the solid fan base it was nervous time from the first to the very last pitch. For the players...

If the Bruins win on Friday they will play on Saturday at 2 p.m. If they win their game on Saturday they will play on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the championship round. The other two teams in the three-day four-team double-elimination tournament are San Jose State and Fullerton. The No. 9 Bruins are 42-13 and...

  • The Yankees (21-9) Appear To Be For Real

    Mitch Chortkoff|May 11, 2017

This wasn’t supposed to be a special year for the Yankees, who have had so many of them in the past. But they’ve been winning a lot in the early part of the 2017 season and last weekend they captured my attention. They were in Chicago to play the defending champion Cubs. I watched all three games on television and was so impressed that I decided to devote my weekly column to them. You probably know by now the Yankees swept the series, including the six-hour, 18 inning win on Sunday night which w...

  • Culver Baseball Qualifies For CIF Playoffs

    Fred Altieri|May 11, 2017

The mission: win at Beverly Hills or risk abruptly ending the season two days later in Culver City. Accomplished: the Centaurs of Culver High stepped up to the plate for a 6-3 clincher over the Normans of Beverly High to secure a 2017 CIF Baseball Playoff berth. The win brings Culver's Ocean League record to 6-3 with one home game remaining against Beverly Hills. They are currently tied for second place with Santa Monica and two games behind virtual league champs El Segundo (8-1) as league play...

  • Do Dodgers Have Enough Pitching To Make A Championship Bid?

    Mitch Chortkoff|May 4, 2017

This was the question I asked last season. The answer was both yes and no. They lacked the elite starting pitching I thought was required. They fooled me by riding into the playoffs triggered by surprisingly good hitting. But they lost the showdown with the Cubs that could have put them into the World Series when they started two rookie pitchers in games 4 and 5 against two experienced opponents and lost both games. I wondered why the Dodgers hadn’t bid for elite free agent starting pitchers i...

  • A Win Over Santa Monica Boosts Culver's Hopes

    Fred Altieri|May 4, 2017

Any sporting event between Culver City High and Santa Monica High is the definition of intense competition. Nothing epitomizes this more than the annual two-game home-and-away series between the two Ocean League archrivals on the baseball field. The 2017 heated series continued as the host Centaurs prevailed 7-2 against the Vikings in Game One on Tuesday afternoon, May 2 at the upgraded and spacious confines at Culver High. The result left both teams tied in the league standings at 5-2 and one g...

  • Carson High Wins Culver Volleyball Tournament

    Fred Altieri|May 4, 2017

Ten local schools participated in the Culver City High Boys Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, April 29 at Del Goodyear Gymnasium. After all the spikes, digs and sets had settled Carson High clinched the Championship Game, 25-22, over North Torrance in the Gold Bracket. Beverly Hills beat Leuzinger for the Silver Championship. Besides the Culver City varsity team, Lawndale, Hawthorne, St. Paul, Brentwood and the Culver City High junior varsity also competed in the day-long format. Culver City...

  • Local Colleges To Have Another Busy Sports Weekend

    Steve Finley|May 4, 2017

Here we go again. It seems like every weekend UCLA and USC teams are involved in athletic competition. Last weekend UCLA and USC men’s and women’s track and field teams had their annual dual meet at USC and the UCLA football team played its Spring Game inside Drake stadium on the UCLA campus. This weekend the Bruins and the Trojans will battle each other in baseball at USC and the UCLA softball team will face the No. 1 team in the Pac-12 and the No. 3 team in the nation, Arizona at UCLA. The...

  • If Clippers Lose Will There Be A Big Shakeup?

    Mitch Chortkoff|Apr 27, 2017

As this paper goes to press the Clippers have lost Game 5 and have to win Games 6 and 7 to avoid elimination from the NBA playoffs. The Utah Jazz, who didn’t make the playoffs in recent years, have steadily improved and are a worthy first round opponent The teams both won 51 games in the regular season so their close battles now should not come as a surprise. My conclusion is that they both should be congratulated for being better than all Western Conference teams except the top three, Golden S...

  • Big Win Inspires Culver Baseball Team

    Fred Altieri|Apr 27, 2017

Last Saturday's bus drive out to Granada Hills in the hot San Fernando Valley to play the Kennedy High Cougars was the shot in the arm the Culver City High baseball team was looking for. The result, a classic, 2-1 extra-inning come from behind victory marks the critical turning point of the season for the Centaurs. With the score tied 1-1 with one out in the top of the eighth inning Culver designated hitter Matt Rummelsburg took a lead off first base. At the plate Max Sterner worked to a full...

  • Culver Still has a Chance In Baseball Race

    Fred Altieri|Apr 20, 2017

After four Ocean League games the Culver City High baseball team certainly has their work cut out for them as the Centaurs expect to successfully defend their league title. The team is also fighting for a spot in the 2017 CIF Playoffs beginning in May. After posting a 10-0 record in 2016 the team is currently 2-2 following split decisions with both Lawndale High and El Segundo High. Six more league games will be played in the next few weeks, two each against Hawthorne, Santa Monica and Beverly...

  • Clippers Go To Utah With Key Strategy

    Mitch Chortkoff|Apr 20, 2017

The Clippers lost their first playoff game on their home court but they developed a new strategy for the rest of their first round series. Attack the basket. Attack, then attack some more. And some more. The reason was that Rudy Gobert, Utah’s outstanding young center, was out with knee injury suffered in the first 11 minutes of Game One. Without his abilty to block shots the Jazz would be vulnerable to an attacking opponent. Doc Rivers, a coach who has an NBA championship on his resume, e...

  • UCLA Softball Hosts California This Weekend

    Steve Finley|Apr 20, 2017

The UCLA softball team will try to move up in the Pac-12 standings this weekend when they face a good California Golden Bears team. The Bruins are in fifth place in the conference with a record of 5-7. Their overall record is 30-12. The Bears are 25-13 overall and 3-8 in conference play so the Bruins will have their hands full against California on Friday (Today) at 7 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. After the California series the Bruins will have nine more conference games...

  • Will There Be A Woman Coaching An NBA Team Soon?

    Mitch Chortkoff|Apr 20, 2017

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says he will work hard to assure that a woman will become head coach of an NBA team while he is in office. “The physical difference between men and women makes no difference in coaching a team,” he said. “It will happen sooner than later.”Four-time WNBA MVP Lisa Leslie agrees. “We can do anything,” she said. Either someone can coach or not. What difference does it make if it’s a man or a woman.’Leslie, a star at Morningside High and USC, played 12 years in the WN...

  • Dodger Fans Make Scully's Replacement Welcome

    Mitch Chortkoff|Apr 20, 2017

Dodger fans who attended the season opener last week should be proud of themselves. When new announcer Joe Davis was introduced prior to the game against the San Diego Padres he received a warm welcome. Davis, who was hired as the ever popular Scully retired after 67 years, said he thought he might be booed. “It was on my mind,” he admitted. Instead there were cheers for the Dodgers’ new TV announcer. Not just a little out of courtesy but a lot from the sellout crowd. The 29-year-old Davis...

  • It's Looking Good For Culver Golf

    Fred Altieri|Apr 13, 2017

Yes, Culver City High has a golf team. Not surprisingly, many of school's students and teachers are also not aware of this fact. The sprawling athletic fields that adorn the campus supporting the more traditional team sports perhaps add to the adage: out of sight, out of mind. High school golf is not a spectator sport and not played on school grounds. But change is in the air, on the tees, the greens, fairways and bunkers. For the past few seasons, Centaur golfers have been swinging away to...

  • I'm Proud Of Gonzaga Even In Defeat They Lose But They're Still Best In The West

    Mitch Chortkoff|Apr 6, 2017

I’ve appreciated Gonzaga basketball for a long time without finding time to write about this impressive basketball team. Today the time has come even though Gonzaga has just lost the NCAA Championship game. It was an ugly contest with far too many fouls being called but the point is that little Gonzaga stayed with longtime powerhouse North Carolina until the final minutes. And I’m hearing that Gonzaga will be highly rated next season again. I’ve been to Spokane several times on my Laker trips...

  • Will Paul George Be The Next Laker Star? Maybe

    Mitch Chortkoff|Mar 30, 2017

Paul George has a year remaining on his contract with the Indiana Pacers. Then he becomes a free agent. With the end in sight, Pacers President Larry Bird had trade talks with at least five teams before the recent deadline but no deal was made, Magic Johnson called Bird. The former great players for the Lakers and Boston Celtics weren’t reliving their remarkable playing careers. It is likely Johnson inquired about getting George in a trade sometime next season. A trade makes sense for the P...

  • OH, NO, Clippers Get Ambushed By Sacramento

    Mitch Chortkoff|Mar 30, 2017

Outscored 22-3 At The finish They Search For Answers After the Clippers lost an 18-point lead in the final five minutes at Staples Center Sunday Coach Doc Rivers was asked the obvious question. “What happened and why?”He didn’ t flinch from the question. He didn’ t blame his players. He tried to explain. “I always look at myself first,” he said. “I wasn’ t happy from early in the fourth quarter. We led by 15 and I’ m looking for it to become 25. But that didn’ t happen.”The questio...
